HOW TO: BJ engine coversion

hey,
i dunno if this is a re post, but i found this today:
http://www.themazdaforum.com/showthread.php?t=4835

its a kl-ze conversion for a bj astina....

Theres a bit of info regarding this on mazda247 :)

Crazy canadians where the first to do it IIRC. Theres not alot of info available and what there is, has been translated from french.

EDIT: There seems to be alot more there then what i found on mazdas247.

EDIT2: WOOT looks like if i was able to grab a capella front cut would slot pretty much straight in.

I'm pretty sure this isn't legal here, unfortunately. I think the ADRs regarding emmisions are a problem, since the KL was only used until 1997 in Australia, the same year that there was a change in the ADR for emmisions. But if someone can correct me and show how we could legally do it in Queensland, that would be great! Maybe things like neither the JDM KL-ZE or the Australian FP having EGR might be significant?

i dont know about emmisions gonzales, but i think that a engine conversion can be done ONLY if you upgrade the things like suspension and breaks to equivilent or better of that on the car that the engine came from (and a mod plate is not needed IF that engine is available from factory for that car :))

but you cant put an older engine into a new car....
so if it only came out in a 97 model, bj's are out..

u can put any engine in to any car you just have to seek permision from QT or RTA or whatever it is down in vic or sa im sure of it :)

02-KQ-LASR 20-01-2009 09:34 PM

might be true, i got into an arguement with a guy at a local wrecker because he told me to buut a bpt into my laser, and i said i cant because of this rule, and he said no, you can... long story short, i told him what the rule is and that im trying to actually drive the car! and he stoppped talking to me! hahahaha!

You can put an older engine into a newer car, but it depends on when each engine/car was emissions tested. Victoria you can't unless you're lucky.

Since ADR 37 was superceded the same year the KL stopped being available in Australia (1997), I assume it would not be eligible for installation in a 2002 BJ, unless there is some exception for an imported engine (eg KL-ZE from a 2002 Capella)? I'm pretty sure emmisions is the main legal issue, since the weight and displacement increase isn't that much.

The Capella engine probably hasn't been certified to ADRs and as such not on their list. Unless it was certified under the Millenia compliance, which was only delivered with the KJ in Australia and was available until 2003.
