What to do with a stuffed FP-DE.

As you know I have sucked water into my engine and it has lost compression on number 4 cylinder, its 160 vs 180 on the others, as well as sounding like there is something loose inside the engine.
Im not doing anything to the car until I have worked out what to do.

Currently my options are:

1. Fix only what ever is wrong with my engine and hope for the best. <92KW

2. Rebuild my current engine upgrading what ever parts that are possible along the way as well as balancing it etc. >92KW

3. Chuck a FS-DE in place of the FP-DE. (requires gearbox + brakes+ECU+new mags) <98KW

4. Import a FS-ZE and install that. (requires gearbox + brakes+ ecu+mags) >125KW

5. Import a FS-ZE and swap all parts possible into my block. Hope the ecu doesn't throw a complete spack.. >92KW

6. Get a second hand FP-DE and hope for the best. <92KW

If anyone can throw more ideas or knowledge on the subject please let me know.

Depends on the kind of money your willing to spend.

Cheapest would be to strip your engine and inspect it. Replace what ever parts you need. May just be a piston for cyl 4.

If you want to go all out go for a FS-ZE and a aftermarket ECU.

project.r.racing 19-01-2011 07:54 PM

I would open it up and actually find out what is wrong with it 1st. Then make a decission.

Orion 19-01-2011 11:51 PM

Only one of those options is going to net you any significant power gain. That is throwing a full FS-ZE in with gearbox + brakes + rims. And for what you have already spent on that stuff, you might as well get an after market ECU and not even bother trying to an FS-ZE ECU to work.

Cheapest, easiest, and most reliable (you know this will work) would be to fix your current engine. Or perhaps drop a fresh(er) one in - might even resolve you oil pressure issue.

It's not what options - it's how deep your pockets are.

because each one costs money. 90% of population will either find problem fix it move on and that may include a recondtioned engine or some head reco work to replace a bent vlave etc.

The import change etc options Are just as costly or inexpensive depending on how you look at it.

I use my 626 wagon as example - bought with valve stems gone.
Options were - repair - mild mods - costed $2900. NO ECU (as I'd use unichip I had doing nothing )
legal no issue
Work the 2.2L - more so mild er gains not as easy to drive with big cam
minmal issue
Option 2 drop in F2T -gearbox - easy rego etc etc. OR turbo current engine - same thing.
legal issues but passable.

option 3 import motor FE DOHC - $800 -ECU $1500 tuned - labour - cost $5000.

I took option 3 - reason I know it cost $5000.
because I had to do new driveshafts - new clutch Additional parts the car needed.

All these thing have to be added in place. If I did work my self save big money - problem I don't save time. it was converted tuned in 3 weeks drive in drive out whole new suspension drive line - bushes.

Now it's okay and easier doign it over time and you don't see the big bill but it all adds up.

So just ask your self, are you seriously willing to do such modifications to a car worth $5000 or so.

Work out how much you really have to spend because you don't want to find out latter you need in 1 week to redo - rear brakes because of murphys law or something unexpected. If the car is your only travel can you afford to have it off the road for a long time etc.

IMO if it was me I'd sell it buy a Sp20. but that's be because I want to make legalites quicker and simpler - AKA don't doo more then required.

If you find it's minor head issues you can always have it decked slightly mildly smothend and tickles when it's out.

I made a few calls today and have found a front cut belonging to one of the limited edition Mazdaspeed Familias with the special Mazdaspeed tuned FS-ZE's in it.

I think thats whats is going to happen to my car now.
Its not everyday you find one of these.

That is an awesome find! :D Considering there were only a few hundred ever made!

Good thing is that it will also give you the gearbox and all of the front running gear that you will need ;)

Keep us in the loop with progress :)

Awesome news! From NZ i'm guessing?

Only things I can see being of any value bringing over would be the headlights and fog lights.

Are you also getting the gearbox, drive shafts, hubs, calipers etc Phil? It would make it a drop in conversion? ;)

The other thing I thought might be worth getting sent over would be the gauge cluster - just in case there are any minor differences with the MSF wiring

mynameisdaniel 28-01-2011 02:44 PM

If you can, get me a price on the headlights and that splitter under the front bumper :)
Cheers,
Daniel.

Rupewrecht 28-01-2011 03:01 PM

You've got PM.

...hang on, shouldn't the headlights be blackened?

project.r.racing 28-01-2011 03:13 PM

Is it a SE20?
edit/ Most images on the web have regular headlights.

chicaboo 28-01-2011 03:18 PM

SE20 have black headlights. That's a Familia with FS-ZE, as you can see the funny black box on top of the IM. If it's an auto, you can forget about Darryl's suggestion. :(

Rupewrecht 28-01-2011 03:38 PM

Ah you're right, my bad :)

Yeah, it has been a nagging thought in my head that the Mazdaspeed Familia (MSF) had black headlights . Interweb image search might help clarify.

Certainly the black box on the IM says its an FS-ZE. Another thing in your favour, is that it is correct rear spoiler (ironing board) for the MSF. Short of a VIN number check, they other thing to look for are the gold 10-spoke 17x7 rims that I believe were unique to the MSF.

As for the gearbox, I'm not sure if they came in ghey-auto versions, but I do know that some of them came with AWD!

Rupewrecht 28-01-2011 03:46 PM

Google Images says silver headlights. I was surprised.

The Mazda Speed Familia only came as a 5 speed manual, this is supposedly a FS-ZE as ithe Mazdaspeed had a serial number belonging to the base model.
This car was accidentially cut up beore it left japan as they thought it was a base model 1.5L

I was looking at getting the entire front cut but the cost is starting to sky rocket.
At the moment im only going to grab the ECU + loom + engine as the cost of the front cut is beyond my budget.
I thought I would offer the rest of the parts to everyone here so I could try and get the whole car here and sell the unused parts.

So is the one you are getting just a FS-ZE (10.4 compression pistons)?
Or is it a Mazdaspeed Familia (10.7 compression pistons)? Is that why they cut it up - because of the base model serial number?

Fair enough. I suppose it won't be too difficult to source all the running gear here in Aus easily enough anyways :)

)

It is a Mazdaspeed Familia with the 10.7:1 pistons and crazy cams.
They also came with larger than stock brakes but I can't afford them atm so if anyone else wants them I can get them as well.

And yes you are right, they chopped it up before it got to NZ, as soon as it arrived tehre they realised what they had done.
It was in perfect condition and has done 130,000 km.
