platypus 07-06-2004 09:43 PM

now that is dedication!

i'm gonna be filling up with petrol... thats my get ready for the cruise....

i'm using 10/40 anyway... cold starts are fairly well covered there

arden 07-06-2004 10:07 PM

hey i just topped up with 5w30 on sunday!

waitin for 2morrow to top up with BP!

Dogo 08-06-2004 10:14 AM

cmon we all know u'll be pouring as much octane booster into your tank as u can too

twilightprotege 08-06-2004 11:04 AM

i always use castrol 5w 30. it's all good

ps - octance doenst = power all the time. more octane can reduce power if the timing isnt advanced.

platypus 08-06-2004 11:58 AM

grrr just realised i need to make an oil change today... bummer eh?

might just try a different oil... but i like my shell helix... it has a handy dandy pourer thingy

arden 08-06-2004 12:03 PM

Cmon
try some Castrol Formula R 5w30
indulge urself

twilightprotege 08-06-2004 12:04 PM

after this trip my car will have over 60000k's on the clock. pretty average for just over 3 years old. damn will have to service it.

twilightprotege 08-06-2004 12:13 PM

yeah come on james - go for the power!!! remember ... thinner oil = less windage from the crank = more power :D

platypus 08-06-2004 02:24 PM

hehe, righto its motul then!!!! bah hahaha!!!!!

but my poor old girl needs protection!!! 165,000 on the clock and still counting... come the end of this trip it will be more....

not only a post whore a mile whore too!!

Nate 08-06-2004 02:34 PM

nate will come dang close to 200 000klms

Cosmo Dude 08-06-2004 07:41 PM

Had to put a new instrument cluster in the 929, the wrecker said 'You know where they are. Pick one with a good milage
'86 929 with 156,000 km on the clock

Old one only had 210,000 which is still realy low

dfvadr 08-06-2004 08:58 PM

i use pennzoil every 10,000 comes out almost as clean as it went in so im happy but then again it is only the 3rd oil service

mrpayner 08-06-2004 09:00 PM

I'll be trying Castrol Formula R 10W-60 next time i change oil. Been hearing great things about this oil

AP

dfvadr 08-06-2004 09:15 PM

i wouldn't be going as high as 60w on a daily driver see 5w means its like water so there for as soon as you start ur car it up the top the oil pump can pump it easyier now on the other side of things going on our air temp around the coast line 60w is far to thick an unless ur in extream heat no benifit actually i think it would be the opppisite the oiul is too thick an u mite end up with 2/3's the engine life you should have got

Toyboy 08-06-2004 09:19 PM

The supplier to the oil i usually use cant get it any more so im about to try the new mobil 1 stuff thats 5-50w,any1 else used this and had any drama's :?:

Cosmo Dude 08-06-2004 09:24 PM

Can be a little difficult, the thinner oil can cause a thick mist in the crank case which has a detrimental effect on top end power (unless you take appropriate steps) while an older engine with worn bits and pieces can benefit from a thicker oil.
I guess you need to do your own research and make your own decision.

dfvadr 08-06-2004 09:37 PM

grant you that rod but im talking good conditioned motors here an also what ur quoting in reguards to the crank case these are not race cars developing that sort off heat to create mist if u get mist in ur crank with oil in there ur got real problems

platypus 09-06-2004 12:12 AM

they all do it mate... oil gets dirty through the cruddy mists... its life.....

and your meant to change oil every 6 mths/10,000km arn't ya?

JynX 09-06-2004 08:45 AM

Im running 20W-50 Penzoil MultiVis and only getting slight tappet chatter when cold.
