HOW TO: BG headlight "lazy eye" mod

Y'know that little mod you see various owners of BG Astinas do where the headlights don't completely retract down? Dunno if you like it or not but I reckon it looks cool :) Is it easy to do this? Because I've tried taking off a battery terminal, then manually winding the light motors so they pop up a tiny bit, but as soon as i conenct the battery again they pop back down automatically :(

Should be much the same for astina, i'd say

The ideal method would be to shorten the throw on the motor arm and move the motor closer to the light nacelle (or lengthen the throw at the lamp and move the motor further away).
Problem is that the light will never fully close.
Plus is that it's a no stuffing 'round with switches and timing where the lights are solution.

I think i saw a how to on the popuplights website under the DIY section.....yep just looked it up it's there

they work with a 3 way toggle switch.
off - lights work as normal
on - sleepy eyes comes into operation.
in the on position, the lights won`t pop up as normal. you then toggle the switch to set the lights at the desired height.
its all on pop ups. ;)
we can get the kits over here from Ebay, look for them under MX5. should cost you about $30. if that.
its just a switch and a resistor i think.

haha sweet, i might have a crack at this. i have a few empty switch holes in the centre console thanks to the previous owner.

4ORGD 05-06-2009 06:51 PM

now i get it lol ...............

so fresh 05-06-2009 10:57 PM

ok..b4 u u start you need to open the bonnet, open the fuse thingy, turn your headlights on,ur lights should be up right now) now find the fuse that stops the headlight from going down, and if u put it back in the lights should go down(a test to find the right fuse that makes the lights go up n down)then u follow the pics.
now for the fuse n male connecters in the 3rd pic that looks budget as!!so i just got a rubber fuse holder from autobarn (more professional look..lol)

have fun all!!

yeah i agree with you im still lookin for it too(a spring loaded toggle switch)

question..
do the headlights go up automatically when you turn the lights on?
if they dont is there a seperate switch that flups them up?
cus if there is a seperate switch, wouldnt it be so much easier to install a spring button switch in parallel to the up/down one?
that way you just tap it when the headlights are down and they pop up a little bit.. no need for long wires or that fuse taping thingy :D

so fresh 06-06-2009 10:31 PM

1.yes they do.
2.there is no seperate switch for them
thats way u make a lazy eye kit
3.u need that switch to make it work.
coz if u just mod the current switch thats on there
it will still do the same thing
u cant do the "2 birds with 1 stone" trick with the current switch
thats why the wiring is involving the fuse for example

with the fuse in,the lights turn on and they pop up n down but...
without the fuse the lights turn on but didnt pop up or down (what ever position the lights have start in) so...
that fuse is like the power to make the lights motors turn on which makes the lights pop up and down.
the lazy eye kit (or toggle switch)controls that power to turn the motors on for the lights to pop up at what ever hight u want them to be so in saying that...
THE TOGGLE SWITCH CONTROLS THE MOTORS THAT MAKE THE LIGHTS POP UP

im no auto electrician but that would be the logical way for the lazy eye kit to work

next question???

70NYD 06-06-2009 10:47 PM

the fuze protects the circuit from over loading and burning throught and the, i understand what the toggle switch does mate
i just didnt understand where the power feed was coming from, i never had a car with popups to play around with :p
what i meant was if the lights popup when they are turned on, that means that the motor is trigered either by the stork directly or my a relay down the track, find the wire from the stork that controls the motors and splice it from a 12V before the stork with a button switch, jsut means less wiring :p and that way the lights dont have to be on to go up partially ;)

next questions
do the lights pop up now when the headlights turn on or do they have to be poped up through the new switch?
when the lights are up partialy are they on?
when the fuze is not conected the lights still go on but not up right?

u can allways kill 2 birds with one stone, just have to line it up carefully ;)
