any practice days coming up?

Hey guys

I was wondering if there was an open track day any time soon? I'm keen to get some experience on a circuit.
I plan on getting my cams license some time this year so I'm keen for time on the track :)

This should have all the info you need, for both Lakeside & QR :)

Look for the street sprints at either QR or Lakeside. If you've never run it hard before I would recommend QR as there are huge gravel pits and lots of room to screw up before you find a wall to hit. Lakeside is by far a more entertaining track, but there is definitely more to hit and it's harder to master.

Thankyou!!! :)

Might go to the June session at QR

What sort of cars usually show up?

derb 26-03-2013 04:22 PM

I may even be there with you!

Street sprints are supposed to be for street registered cars. You'll get a few insane cars there that are nothing but body panels on a tube frame surrounding an engine, but when I went weekend before last there was the HSV club there, a bunch of Alfas, MX5-s, my little beast, my mate's bosses e92 M3 [that he got to drive, so jealous!], a bunch of Nissans, almost everything you can think of.

They will split the drivers up into groups based on the type/power of the car or previous lap times, which is nice as the last thing you want to have to deal with is some race car up your bum or having to wave people past constantly so you never get a solid lap. You either rent, or buy, a transponder from the office which is what gives you super accurate lap times down to the thousandth of a second and then you get sent out for 6 laps with your group. You basically spend the first lap warming up a little and then foot flat as you come on to the main straight and keep going until they wave the chequered flag at you, then you come back in after letting the car 'warm down' over the last lap.

They will call the next group to line up when the running group is about halfway through their laps so there is little time wasted. We believed there would be only 4 sessions, but they must have run at least 6-7 which was pretty good value for money. No passengers, but there is no limit to how many people can drive your car, as long as they are registered and pay their entrance fee. You only need long sleeve cotton pants and shirt and a helmet. No special race gear required, not even a fire extinguisher if you don't want to bring one. It really is a 'run what you drove here' type of event which is great and no-one seems to mind you sticking your head into their engine bays between sessions. Just bring lots of water/powerade/etc and prepare to have sore arms lol.

Wow your informative :D

Hope to see you there! Just got to find a helmet.....

And fix my stalling problem.... But that's for another thread

How do you thing a stock bg will match up?

derb 26-03-2013 05:18 PM

Match up to what exactly? My car will most likely kill yours, figuratively speaking, since I've got a turbo and a LSD. But I'm still in the slowest group, so just turn up and have fun man. Your times will get quicker and quicker as you learn how your car responds under brakes and through the corners. Just compete against your self and see what kind of times you can cut. Also no cams licence required for the street sprints.

Look on gumtree :) theres usually all sorts on there.

If you want a new one, theres a Motocross outlet at Yatla.

Midget0141 26-03-2013 05:25 PM

Power wise?

Wow where did you find an LSD :o

Doesn't the turbo put you up a class? :s

derb 26-03-2013 06:15 PM

Power wise I'm still only making around 160hp at the wheels which is nothing compared to most actual sports cars that are out there. But it was fast enough to keep all the other cars in my group at a distance. No one caught up to me and I couldn't catch up to the guy in front of me, if you understand.

LSD is actually really cheap! You'll need to upgrade to the DOHC gearbox and then you get a full gear-type LSD from mFactory in the USA for $700 before shipping. It's one of the best mods I've had done to the car, all the power through corners with zero understeer.

An lsd, installed at a shop will cost close to $1000, because you need a new bearing which adds to the cost. Just got a mazdaspeed one today actually! Personally I'd try and find an sp chassis, but for the time being add suspension and brakes, as they'll be easily transferred.

Midget0141 27-03-2013 06:24 AM

What's the difference with the sp chassis?

derb 27-03-2013 08:35 AM

SP was the chassis that had the DOHC motor, power windows, sunroof, bigger brakes. But my car started out as a SOHC too, I just installed the SP brakes on mine after the turbo motor conversion. I don't need power windows or a sunroof or anything. You can actually bolt the turbo motor up to your current gearbox, but it will go boom pretty quick. Mine died after about 6 months, I stripped third gear and destroyed the diff.

EDIT: Also, I meant to say that I ran in the Open Sprints weekend before last and will probably run that event again on May 19 as I like the idea of 6 lap sessions instead of 4 lap sessions.

Midget0141 27-03-2013 12:06 PM

Oh okay so it would benefit me to find sp brakes and bp motor? I have 300000+ ks so I don't mind buying a new engine

derb 27-03-2013 02:32 PM

Depending on price it may just be better to buy a whole car.

Midget0141 27-03-2013 04:55 PM

Don't have the space to do much sadly
