B6 - 1.6L SOHC EFI
B6T - 1.6L 4cyl DOHC EFI Turbo
B8 - 1.8L 4cyl SOHC EFI
BP - 1.8L 4cyl DOHC EFI
BPT - 1.8L 4cyl DOHC EFI Turbo (GTX spec)
BPD - 1.8L 4cyl DOHC EFI Turbo (GTR spec)

F series (found in BJ)
FP-DE - 1.8L 4cyl DOHC EFI

note not all these engine were found in astinas - this merely shows their variants that came in other mazda models

off the top of my head :
( so correct me if I'm wrong )

AF Ratio - Air / Fuel Ratio
Rich - Air / Fuel ratio of more fuel to air
Lean - Air / Fuel ratio of more air to fuel
Stoich - Air / Fuel ratio of 14.7/1 , is the ratio of complete combustion
ECU - Engine Control Unit
VAF - Vane (?) Air Flow meter
Hall Effect - Type of Crankshaft position sensor used in astinas. Uses pulses from metal fins passing a magnet
EGO or 02 sensor - Exhaust Gas Oxygen sensor - amount of oxygen in exhaust, also known as Lambda Probe
Detonation/Knocking/PInging - Unstable combustion inside bore. DANGEROUS !!
ICV - Idle Control Valve - Valve on throttle body that allows air to bypass throttle butterfly
Closed Loop - Ecu controlled mixture adjustment, based on EGO sensor. Used when little or constant throttle is in use
Open Loop - Ecu mixture mode used to provide power and responsiveness
Adjust Timing - Adjust the point at which sparks fire in the engine cycle.
( and valves open ? but i only know 1 astina with adjustable cam gears, yes dan thats u :P )
Exhaust Backpressure - pressure of exhaust against rather than away from engine. Either by vacuum or restricted exhaust system
TDC - Cam centre point which timing is based on. Occurs after Exhaust valves open, and before Intake valves open. Usually with some overlap of openings
BTDC - Measurement of degrees before TDC
ATDC - Measurement of degrees after TDC
Exhuast/Intake Valve Duration - angles in degrees of which the exhaust or intake valve is open.
Tuned Length Extractors - Exhaust manifold with interconnecting pipes designed to create a low pressure at the time of exhaust valve opening to aid extract exhaust gasses from engine
Reverse Flow muffler - Muffler that forces exhaust thru an 'S' bend through dampening material
Straight Thru Muffler - Muffler with straight perforated pipe surrounded by dampening material
Dyno - Machine used to measure car/engine characteristics by simulating movement (ie lets wheels spin, but not move )
KW - Kilowatts - Measurement of power output by car.

enough for me. Not much point going into turbo/supercharger terminology too

TDC-Top Dead Center - this occurs when No. 1 piston is at it's uppermost point generaly at the end of the compression stroke and start of the power stroke. This is used to set the timing of the cams and ignition. Since 1985 very few road cars have the inlet valve open before the exhaust is fully closed, this may allow unburnt fuel into the exhaust and out the tailpipe, this is considered polution.

tho TDC is timed on piston 1 its only for simplicities sake yeh ?
from what i understand the term coversthje timing across all pistons - as they all should have indentical timing. Its just that they events occur one after the other in sequence. ie 10deg advance is 10deg across all pistons

i do disagree that they dont use valve overlap anymore. Refer to :

You can clearly see that overlap exists in these OEM cams. It even provides the overlap degrees in the chart.

OK,
TDC refers to the piston position and then relates to cam and ignition timing for that cylinder. If you were timing a V configuration engine then you would need a reference from the crank to each bank of cylinders, a radial engine you may need to time each cylinder.
For general tuning the TDC timing mark is for number 1
Engines that use sequential multipiont EFI can inject after the overlap to avoid the polution thing and I guess the technology may and probably has gotten to this piont, hence the price and rarenes of aftermarket cams for the BP

Im still in the process of learning exactly what happens under the bonnet, what everything is and why its there. This is good stuff !!

btw, any1 interested in engine performance and modifying to get more power out of your car, I can definitely recommend a book called "21st Century Performance" by Julian Edgar. I got my copy from www.autospeed.com.au and its faantastic !! That and the workshop manuals have been an invaluable reference too
