HOW TO: Removing your BG Dash

Is it possible to remove the dash of a BG without removing the steering wheel? I'd love a quick response on this if someone knows, as i'm painting interior bits today, so if its easy to do, i'll do that dash aswell. if i have 2 take out the wheel, i'll wait untill i get my new steering wheel to do it.

thanks in advance,
mitch

yeah i had to remove a dash from the wreckers, took me like 3 arvos and half a saturday(couple hrs each arvo) im gettin reappholstered atm.
yeah theres about 15/20 screws aprox. but they all face back towards the seats and they arent easy to get to.u will need the smallest screw driver u can find...
but im pretty sure the steering wheel was still on...id take a picture of the dash so u could c where the screws are but its in the shop...
the worst were the last 2 i took out which were right at the middle/back of the dash.
have fun..let us know how u go.

Hey Mitch,

I had to take out the dash from my mazda for a paintjob. It`s easy to do but you have to take some gym lessons to get it out quickly.

i also took some pictures from my car having the dash out already.

Hi guys,

Am trying to get my dash out now. The surrounds are off etc and when i try to pull it out it won't come. It will move around within it's space but can't pull it out. Would it be the speedo cable and if so how do you get to it to disconnect it. I'm trying to get it out so i can put in my white dials.

As a rule of thumb Mazda dashes have 2 bolts each side, a fiew under the radio, one top centre of the dash and through the steering column. Yes you will need to remove the speedo cable before pulling out the dash as well as the wiring and any cables attached to heater controls.

I only need to remove the instrument cluster itself, do i still need to pull apart all the gear by the stereo? it looks like it is loose now and that it's just the speedo cable holding it in. Do i have to try and get to the speedo cable from the drivers side foot well and go up?

Cosmo Dude 23-10-2005 03:56 PM

Normaly it's from underneath. Sometimes you can find some extra length in the engine bay and poke enough through so you can pull out the cluster far enough to un-clip easily. Don't count on it though.
I had a BA with a electric speedo.

there are 3 plugs and a cable.u have to reach up from down near the pedals and get behind and unclip the cable for the speedo, then u will be able to move the cluster more freely so u can fit ur hands in behind to get the 3 plugs.had to do this a couple times the other week...i put my new cluster in then had to take it out cause i replaced my dash(which took me alomst a week!!)...its tight squeeze to get ur hand up behing to reach the cable but u will get it..:) oh by the way hears some pics of how mine turned out..

hey if u do take dash out this might help u out...i took a pic of old dash n tryed to highligh where screws are...the green parts are the 3 bolts u have to take off with spanner...(easiest part) and that plastic panel behind the dash against the w/screen just pops out,use screw driver, start from one side and work ur way along.
hope this is useful to you..
