Difference between two Astinas

Hi
I have a 1991 Astina GT and my sister has a 1991 Astina GLX (I'm pretty sure its a GLX), and they are both 1800 DOHC.
Mine is manual and my sisters is auto and mine seems a hell of a lot more powerful that hers, I wouldn't think that the auto would make that much difference.
My friend told me the GLX and GT engines are the same but my sisters GLX redlines at 6,800 and mine redlines at 7,200.
Are the engines exactly the same?
Can anyone tell me all the differences between these two models?
Thanks heaps.

Difference will be in the gear ratios in the slush box and the manual.

Mine's got a louder exhuast, the suspension seems stiffer, they have different seats and some of the interior is different.
Whats with the different redline?
I think there must be some difference in the engine as mine seems much more powerful.

you appear to be from the UK??? ... best to ask on www.popuplights.co.uk as they will have a better knowledge of the UK models ;)

Nope New Zealand.
I'll check out that site thanks.

never heard of an auto BG astina with DOHC engine...

I think overhere both the DOHC and SOHC redline at 6ooorpm.

jordy 20-10-2004 06:54 PM

Thats really strange.
The auto one is definately a DOHC 1800.
The 1800 DOHC gets 99kW (or so http://english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/ says) at 7000 and my GT and redlines at 7200, and my sisters redlines at 6800 so I asume the redline is when the rev limit comes in, so my sisters one definately wont be as powerful as mine, and maybe the ones your talking about don't get all the power they can either.

hmmm....maybe i can help ur sister?
what does she look like?

mrpayner 20-10-2004 07:10 PM

Wow.. the website definately says 99kw.. in the brochure it's 92kw.. I think 99 might be wishful thinking.

You'll find as Jynx said that the ratios will be different. Before i owned the astina i took a 96 corolla auto for a test drive, it was a 1.8 EFI and it felt slower than my 86 1.6 carby corolla that i had at the time. Auto boxes in smaller cars just don't go anywhere fast...

 you boys have some usefull info on here.

im a member of popuplights.co.uk
some of you have heard of me some aint

jordy i've posted a reply to your question on the other site
as jynx said it's in the automated ratio's
Automatic's are pre set to a given ratio and have a upper rev limit which cannot be breached.
the same applies to the manual's in south east asia/australia they have a de-limiter, so that's why you guys are stuck to 6500ish rpm and your top end speed is'nt too great unless you've had the car de-limited (or it came in normal spec) and chucked turbo's/intercooler's/superchargers etc in there.

anyway any of you who have good working knowledge of the astina engines are welcome to register on the u.k site, we aint got a lot of regular members and there is not many of us on the site so extra input is always welcome

Yeah i dont think ive seen or heard of a BG DOHC Auto tho i guess they would have had to have made them.

Tho the 1.8 SOHC astina has a peak of 76Kw @ 5200rpm and redlines at 6000. The revlimiter kicks in at 7000.... im pretty sure... :?
The 1.8 DOHC SP model peaks at 6500rpm with 92kw this redlines at 7000 and hits the rev limiter at 7500revs... this is what ive most commonly heard anyways and seems pretty acurate to me... is only for 5speeds tho and BG.

Mine says GT on it and has the bucket seats, hers does not have GT on it and does not have bucket seats. They are BOTH 1800 DOHC engines.
My redline is definately 7200 and im pretty sure I hit the rev limiter once, I don't think it was pulling 7500rpm though.
They are both jap imports if it makes a difference.

Dutchy 25-10-2004 10:44 PM

hmmm
yeah mine would both be "aus spec" :) hehe

interesting the way they differ the models sooo much!

Honestly, i'd say it's just that most autos are slanted more towards cruising rather than driving, and hence the softer suspension setup etc

jrp928 06-12-2004 11:47 AM

tHE auto and manual mx-5s have different CR (9.4 and 9.0) and different torque peaks - more down low in auto to get it off the mark. If it was done in them, why not in Astinas?
