motor rebuild

yes it has come time to get the beast back on the road , i have a new block 20 thou oversize forge pistons an billet rods this baby should be bullet proof to 25psi + [im only going to run 8psi though] ill get sum pics up soon of the new pistons an rods beside the standard ones so you can see the difference
as these pistons are 9.0:1 c/r anything over about 20psi is risky of to much pressure in the motor besides i think over 16 would break diffs or gearboxes anyway
taking the motor out in the next couple of days , spent 2day undoing everything ready to just lift motor out
then put crank in for polish, balance,an new bearings
pick up block 2morro its got new welsh plugs all through , then bored 20 thou o/size , decked cleaned an crack checked

Good start, back on the horse etc....
What's in store for the top end?

chipa 15-01-2006 03:59 PM

Nate 15-01-2006 04:03 PM

top end i think will only be bigger injectors an after market fuel pump , the head im happy with as im not after big hp

hopefully 4 weeks

wiredone 19-01-2006 09:00 AM

what happened???

been out of the loop for a while. I thought you were only running 6psi why the need for the rebuild?

9:1 should be fine as long as you make sure you always use 98 and good 98, and it will limit your boost somewhat, but it seems you already know these caveats, so good luck...

arden 19-01-2006 09:16 AM

ZOOM ZOOM BANG! rod went thru block!

dfvadr 19-01-2006 02:41 PM

what happened???
something went horribly wrong i was only running 4psi an cruising at 100 k in 5

I'm interested to know how much a set of Rods cost? The main let down in the BPTs is actually the rods not the piston - They seem to always snap first. I was just going to use GTR or B6T ones but those look mean. But they also look well over the $1000 mark

Seems your motor also wanted the rod to say hello

What brand pistons are they?

boostedbatman 19-01-2006 05:59 PM

And for my interest for my own reasons could you do a weight comparasin between them both

dfvadr 21-01-2006 05:43 PM

the standard rods + pistons an rings are 700grams an the forge set up is 1kg
yes the rods would be around the grand mark

i can actually get the whole set up forge pistons + rings + rods to ur door for $2000 if any-one is interested , not only astinas , hondas wrx,s u name it prices may very a bit
an any c/r you want

my rods are pauter billet rods you can get forge rods a bit cheaper

Sounds like a big project mate, great to hear that things all seem to be coming back together for you, i think 8psi boost should do the job, you would have to be looking at 130 to 140 kw at the wheels on those psi levels and with your newely beefed up motor there is always room for more, but yeah as you have said once you start going over 16 psi boost gear boxes will be the next problem.

I think 12 psi boost wouldnt do the car any harm and if you could get traction it would make way to some pretty impressive 1/4 mile times.

have my block back , sent off my crank , clutch , front pully an pistons an rods had them all fully balanced
now im waiting for head gasket an crank shrft bearings an ill be putting it altogether this week , by the time its 2gether then i have to paint it an reinstall it , i think another 2 weeks should be a goer again

dfvadr 24-01-2006 08:22 PM

damn does it ever end , i have everything back for the motor but now i discover its bloody impossible to get the oil squirters out so ordered 4 new ones 27 bucks each
hopefully my turbo manifold , dump pipe an turbo exhaust manifold will be back 2morro as well so then everything is ready for assemble

Cosmo Dude 24-01-2006 08:32 PM

Did you run over a black cat just before the engine went KABOOM?

Ripper323 24-01-2006 09:59 PM

From the sounds of it I reckon the cat must have been standing on a mirror when he ran over it.

wiredone 25-01-2006 08:54 AM

odd12c... you can get the oil squirters out, not an easy task but it can be done, my machine shop did it for me when i had the block bored... wouldn't want to do it in the car, thats why everytime you should use en engine stand and trial fit everything before you go all the way witha ll your seals and gaskets...

If there is one thing i can say to you though... I really feel your pain, been in situations like this tooooo many times with me astina and lost lots of blood sweat (you know the rest) just to have someone tell me "it should be easy.. your just putting a turbo on".... =)

chin up the best is yet to come.... and no offense but unlike your body work where others have done most of the work, youll appreciate this part of the car 10x more...

you better get ur facts rite because unlike you paying jetspeed to design an build urs for you an ur mate in brookvale that owns the work shop, i have built 98% of my car myself even the sub box an interior is done with my own 2 hands , bodykit design from my own head an drawings suspenion design an fitted by me , you dont no nothing about this car
so talk about blood sweat an tears try doing all that urself next time rather than handing over ur visa card an picking up the car when its finished

dfvadr 26-01-2006 06:53 PM

motor is back 2gether now just got to add starter motor [ when i get one lol] an put on alternator + tappet cover
by the time i do a few touch up bits then put it back in the car , i hope to take it for a run sunday week
