don't expect to stop any quicker on slotted... but do expect to be able to keep stopping :P As twilight said.. imo slottled are worth the $20 loss in pad life... they do an excellent job of expelling hot gasses from pads (especially lucas pads)... cross drilled are for street racers who like how the light shines off them... don't ever bother...
more importantly focus on your fluid and pads... i reccomend Motul RBF600 fluid (it makes dot5.1 look ordinary  ), and without a doubt, the biggest reccomendation i can give you is lucas pads... unless your prepared to spend upwards of $800 on endless or ebc, then lucas is the way to go.... they sh!t all over bendix ultimate (100vs150 degrees; 650vs550degrees), ie, they work from colder and perform till hotter, and the best part... you will not find a cheaper set of pads! For my car $70 for front, $60 for rear..
With only ventilated front and solid rears, running standard daihatsu garbage, even down the back side of glorious, i can only JUST get my pads to start to fade, and they also give miles of warning, unlike some pads that just let go... warning, they do dust up very bad.. but aren't harsh on rotors...
The only other pad that comes close for the money is Bendix Metal King... very loud, very harsh on rotors, good feel though...
