N16 debut around 2001.

I have a 1998 N15 Pulsar VZ-R, and there isn't anything wrong with 'multi-link rear beam' in practice. Although it doesn't look pretty hanging down under the car, it does get the job done well while keeping both back wheels planted on the ground. I have more objection with the bearing cap strut tops on the front that self-disassemble when removing the shocks...
