replacing defective wiring is a must, but be honest: that's not the common reason for most people to pull new wires.
marketing bastards managed to make a lot of people believe that the newest super xxx action wiring with 0.001% less oxygen and the secret vodoo insulation is a worthy investment for their car audio setup, while it is clearly not.

very same goes for the power cables btw. as long as the power wire diameter "buys" you enough time before the fuse blows (to prevent a fire in case of a sudden battery discharge), you'll be totally fine with much smaller diameters than you might have thought.
that's not meant as smartassing, but as a general impulse for rethinking the whole "audio wiring" thing...
