When replacing the CV boots on my BA2.0V6, I couldn't get the drive shaft out of the hub, even after removing the retaining nut. I must have missed something, because I just couldn't get the drive shaft out of the hub - wouldn't budge.
Ended up removing the whole hub/disc/driveshaft assy from the car (by removing drive shaft from gearbox) and replacing both the inboard and outboard boots at the same time. Had to remove / disassemble the inner cv joint first, to allow a new outer boot to be pushed all the way (from inboard to outboard) along the drive shaft, then reassemble/repack the inner boot, before sticking it all back into the car.
VERY messy - moly grease everywhere and lots of cleaning req'd to keep the grit out !!!
