bad idea
I used cheap UV filters before... they've done nothing but add lens flare, reduction of clarity/sharpness, and bugger up the colours

get a quality multi-coated filter... I got a cheap Hakuba MC filter on my 50mm lens... works great and no noticeable loss of image quality! I got a Hoya Pro1 MC filter on my kit lens... one of the best!

for digital cameras, you DON'T want UV filters... they don't do anything except be a protector and image quality reducer... digital cameras are not sensitive to UV light but are sensitive to infrared instead, unlike film cameras.... the best "clear" filters are multi-coated filters!
