The BG 1.8 DOHC BP engines have nothing on the BJ FP 1.8s, even with their 7500rpm redline they just don't have the torque to take on the FP... I've raced (under controlled conditions ofcourse) Mazdabator in his manual SP 1.8 when my auto was stock, from 100 the auto would slowly crawl away and by 140 it would start to jog away quite convincingly. When the auto was modded (minus CAI) it was lineball with a stock manual BJ 1.8 until 140 where the auto would walk away.
One of my mates tells me that my manual looks quicker than the auto did on the highway, even though I don't really feel it myself. But I've not raced anyone in the manual so I wouldn't have a clue.

From 80kph autos have got pretty good gearing and will match manuals quite happily since they have more torque at the wheels. But don't challenge a manual from 60, you'll get slaughtered!
