Retrimming/dying

G'day all,

I'm pretty sick of the grey velourish trim on my doors, and was wondering if anyone had a clue how much it'd cost to have those bits retrimed in nice regular black material.. Or, would it be hard to dye them black myself? The grey is looking a bit old and discoloured.

take your door trim of and have a look see, usually they are on a piece of ply wood, which is screwed glued or clipped to the rest of the plastic/vinyl door facia thing

then the fabric is normally stapled or glued onto the board, if you can rip it up, you should be able to put it back on yourself!

hey mate,
spray them with black vynil/carpet spray. ive used this stuff b4...cost about $20 a can. Its pretty good. Put about 3 light coats. You have to take the door trim out and mask it. excess can be removed with acrylic paint thinner. The vynil paint will not chip. it dries as a very flexible flat black coat. It can be used for very thin carpets and velour.

Ok so using just a basic heavy duty black material with maybe a diferent colour black pattern, cut out a template and glue the new one in. Sounds pretty straight forward

Heres the doors i'll be doing

Is it possible to remove the the actual door handle?? Doing this will give you better results. That's a pretty big area actually.. :?

My daughters recently purchased 1990 Astina (same colour as yours) has the same door cards and cover. They might have looked good new but now the fabric looks like the inside of an old hat.

The armrest is part of the door. I know as one of hers had been damaged (hole through the foam) and I had to fill it with ecxpandable foam. I made a little mess of it in that it expanded too much and has a bit of a bump there now but at least it's secure without the hole.

I priced new door cards - ouch. The cheapest I could get was $150 each. Just no worth it.

If you go ahead, let us know how it went and any tricks. If it works OK, I might have a go too.

I've talked to the local chinese clothes repair place (we all have them) and they suggested staining the felt on the door to freshen it up. Mmmmm

BTW, just found out that my daughters car had been in a prang before she bought it and the previous owner had touched it up. Will never know how much damage but I'm pissed off. I found out when the sun hit the bonnet in just a certain light. I never saw it when I went to buy it. Damn. According to the RTA, it's not rebirthed so hope the paint doesn't start falling off in the next few years. Mind you, the saem guy said the clutch had been done and mysteriously had no receipts. I knew it was a bit shady at the time but we got the car for a good price. Had it checked over at Mazda and nothing serious. The engine returned good compressions and doesn't blow smoke. Mind you, the box oil had not been changed in years (came out emulsified green). Engine mounts splitting but most do. A few leaks around the dist and cam cover.

Anyone know how to improve the fuel consumption in the BG ? Clean injectors/new plugs ? Seems to use a bit of gas - at least more than I thought.

Well, enough rambling for now. Have to attack the shops for last few presents for the kids. Merry Christmas guys

the black spray finishes like vynil finish. soft and flexible...a bit like cloth if u want. try it on a piece of carpet first if u want. its worth trying it because it will save u a lot of hassle cutting and gluing stuff. it also dries to touch in 5 mins, but needs a least 24hrs before complete curing.
