TIMING

Hey everyone. I recently bought a mazda astina 323 and needed to do some repairs. I had a problem with one of the cams (the pin had snapped) and now I guess the timing is OUT. I have no idea how to fix the timing and I cant find it seems i have to wait a while to order a haynes/gregory's manual for the car. If anyone knows how I could adjust the timing or if anyone knows a site which has detaisl about this please let me know. Thanks.

hi mate and welcome.
you talking about the cam timing or ignition timing?
what model of astina you got? (bg, ba, sp etc..)
here`s a wonderful website for everything to do with maintaining your car.
even though its an american site most things still apply to our cars.

BA, 1995 model

My Astina is a BA 1995 model and it's a 1.8l 16v DOHC engine. The story goes a little like this.. just so you would know what needs to be corrected. Here goes:
I had to change the locator pin in the front cam (the one that alligned with the distributor. My dad force turned the cam for god know what reason. Anyway, I changed the pin and put the gear back onto the pin and bolted it on. My neighbour is an apprentice mechanic and he told me I need to fix up the timing coz now it's all out. Anyhow, whats the standard timing setting? 0 BTDC? or is it something else? If someone could tell me what it's supposed to be and how to set the timing that would be excellent. Thanks guys.

i just cant seem to find the timing settings in the workshop manuals. its gotta be in here somewhere ...

all i find is that the locator pin on the exhaust and intake camshaft pulleys should both be facing straight up. From memory it may say the timing settings on a sticker on the underside of the bonnet.

i`m sure it`s 0 degrees btdc +/- 1degree at idle or 700rpm.
thats for the 1.8 but i think other engines are different.
i`m about 95% sure on that.

thanks everyone

I found some good information on autozone (thanks geetee) and the pins on the cams should be facing straight up.. but what I don't know is where the crankshaft sprocket should be? wouldn't the crankshaft have to be in a specific position when the camshafts are both alligned with their locator pins up?

thanks.

yip, crankshaft woodruff pin should be pointing straight up.
there should be a pointer or other mark on the block so you can line up the crank.

Crankshaft should be at top dead centre for piston number 1. So the balancer
mark should be at 0 on the timing marker and if you flash a torch down the
spark plug hole you should see no1 piston.

Regards

Hey guys it's important i bring this topic back to the top of the list.. IT's a PRIORITY!
My wreck is finally repaired and looks as good as new (almost). I drove it around a bit with no rego - i just had to! And it runs ok.. except for a few disturbing knocks! haha just kidding they aren't disturbing.. but it does click a bit in idle and i can't locate where it's comming from. The clicking is constant and seems to be coming from somewhere on the intake side of the engine. It sounds like plastic clicking. My neighbour (an apprentice mechanic) suggests it's one of the valves making that noise. Any input would be great.
But the reason i'm posting this is because I don't know if my timing is right. I'm aware of how to set the timing (use the timing light, turn the distributer etc to find the timing) but I have just one little problem. THERE IS NO TMING MARK on the crankshaft pulley boss or anything on the crankshaft for that matter. I was wondering now if there is any way I could determine where the timing mark should be?
There is a so called locator pin on the crankshaft that is used to guide where the sprockets and pulleys should be.. and when changing the timing belt.. this pin needs to be facing upward. Now does it mean that on every two turns (the pin facing up wards) the number 1 pistion as at TDC for intake? and on every turn the number 1 piston is at TDC alternating from intake to exhause (combustion in between).
Help me figure this one out guys.. it's troubling me. BigMal you seem to know what you're talking about.. educate me
thanks once again everyone 8)

the clicking on the intake side may be an injector.
try locating it by holding a long screwdriver against the part you think it may be coming from and hold your ear against the handle. should be able to locate it.
dunno about the timing mate, i`ve got a BG

If yo have the time on Sunday pop down to the shifter day and we can run you through checking timing and any other questions, you won't need to bring your car if it's not on the road as their will be a few there already.
