Free-Air Sub
Hi all,
My Brother gave me a brand new 12 inch free air sub and amp and I was thinking about installing them in my SP20 at some stage. What I was thinking was to reinforce my parcel tray with mdf and some more fibreglass and install the sub so that the magnet is facing out of the hatch area (reverse the polarity etc etc for this). Thoughts anyone?

What you said will work, but I can't comment on the performance of the free-air.
Reversing the polarities is not always necessary especially in free-air setups. Try it both ways to see which way is right.... How thick is the parcel tray now? MDF should be used as your baffel, but if you got some good hands on you fiberglassing it in neat and tidy never hurts. -Eric |

Are you saying that you want to screw the sub into the shelf ?
Not a good idea - the energy of the sub will be wasted shaking the shelf instead of moving the basket. You will need to attach the shelf solidly to the car and make the shelf as strong as possible. What model sub is it ? it would probably work fine just in a box. |

I wanted to have the sub sticking out just for a different look. in regards to the MDF (I wanted to use it to strengthen the whole parcel tray - not too sure how thick fibreglass has to be with a sub sticking into it) - I was planning on adding some latches to the parcel tray so that it can be latched in place (no shaking around).
I know I could box it, but I want to keep the hatch space as I'm alway picking stuff up and a box with a sub in it would bound to get damaged (golf club through a sub would be kind of annoying)

If you decide to go without the box, make sure everything loose is either firmly against something else or you put some felt or something between the touching surfaces to prevent rattle. You will never get the depth or the puch out of the same sub without a good box. (IMO)
I had that pivot that you strap a baby seat to in my parcel shelf and that made a lot of annoying noise, but since its been removed its been rather quiet and crisp. I guess my biggest worry is that it would be very visable. I would hate to be coming back to my car one day to find my back windscreen broken, or the hatch door broken into for the sake of a sub. Had two cars broken into and had sound missing so I quess that is my primary worry now. |
