Timing belt!

Hey all...I have a 97' BA with 115,000kms on the clock. When i bought it there was around 94,000 on it and im not sure if the timing belt was changed b4 i got it. I'm guessing not though so its waaayyy overdue

. I'd like to know if there's any way to check the belt without pulling the engine apart. If not i'll just replace it, i know its not cheap ($800 or so?) n they replace a bunch of other stuff at the same time, just wondering if there's anything i should look out for or maybe what u guys have paid in the past thanks!

better to change it anyway. timing belt replacement should cost you about $300-400 but better change the water pump , cam shaft oil seals and cranks shaft oil seals. so all up including parts about $600

timing belt kit + water pump = $450ish

in saying that tho, i brought my 97 BA with 82,000km on the clock. And never changed the timing belt or water pump. Still going at 267,000km.

Mine had 125,000kms on the clock when I got it, and the timing belt hasn't been done - should I get on top of it and have a go at replacing it, or not?

I mean, if it goes, is it gonna kill my engine completely, or just strand me wherever I am until I can get a tow to somewhere to fix it?

it will not destroy your engine. you'll just be stranded on the side of the road.

See, that's happened to me before, in other cars, for other reasons, and it didn't strike me as the worst thing in the world.

And yet, everyone who wants to poke holes in my decision to purchase an Astina has been busy saying "Watch out for the timing belt in those things - if it goes, you're screwed!"

your BP engine is a Non-interference type, i.e. pistons will not hit valves if the timing belt breaks or slips.

So it wont damage your engine!

i got timing belt, water pump, 2 pullies and right engine mount near timing belt changed for $950 all up

but thats sort of mates rates, was very pleased with that. also found out i have to change a cracked read engine mount and a sagged transmission mount.

any recommended places in sydney to get it done at? my mate might be able to do it depending if he can do it at his work (works for a dealership)
and what's the rough price i should be setting aside?

when my car starts up it wines a little sounds like a belt but once warm up it is fine.

had timing belt replaced not so long ago

Sounds like the timing belt maybe to tight -- take drive belts off one by one to see which belt is making the noise.
