Sometimes you can get away with it if you have 2 different [but similar] matched pairs over 4 slots. ie: you have the pairs matched to each other in the same coloured slots. It's a little harder when you only have 2 slots however [only one memory channel], and it's basically pot luck after that.
Because you can underclock memory, it's easier to buy the cheapest matched pair that is faster than what you need. eg: Get 533mhz RAM if you only need 266mhz, and 667mhz if you only need 333mhz, etc... This gives you more flexibility for your memory/bus ratio to work. Last edited by chicaboo; 27-09-2010 at 11:22 AM. |

I have found 667MHz to be cheaper than 533MHz stuff. And there is next to no 1GB modules available second hand in 553MHz. Most 533MHz modules seems to be 512MB.

also on ebay i dunno if its still happening but some people will try sell you high density ram which doesnt work in ALOT (i.e. MOST) computers. i got some cheap and found a Motherboard to get it to work(cheaper than junking $400 of ram) and is still working today. most likely you want low density stuff

The stuff you have in there now is 667mhz running underclocked to 266mhz. So that shouldn't be a problem. The only reason to get a kit of matched pairs is to make sure that they work first time without you pulling your hair out. I think the manufacturers put in the most common RAM that covers the most models in their range. So that will be why mine only runs at 400mhz from 667mhz RAM, while a higher spec model will actually make use of the same cheap RAM.

Yup, I'm gonna go for matched pairs. There is about 5 sets of 2x1GB DDR2 667MHz on ebay for under $30. All second hand pulled from upgraded lappies.
The ebay ones that I posted up earlier in the thread went for $31.00 + $6.00 shipping. |

Why thank u gav it wasnt much but ftom mem i only built yhis comp 4-6 months ago I think the setup it helps with cooling. I wanted 6 stics straight away but I can't justify the need nor did I want to buy a fan and another sync lol. My 1st comp (10yrs ago) had heating issues now I'm obsessed with keeping everything cool (no water or anything more extream just air cool) when I do eventually go to 6 sticks I will get the damn sync and another gpu to run sli ( currently one 470) and another screen (3d ready one) to play my games in 3D well that's the dream anyway haha
sorry for OT Last edited by 70NYD; 27-09-2010 at 02:37 PM. |
