NSW Regulations for Modified cars
Hello all
I had a spare 30minuites during my lunch break and read on another forum about people whinging about NSW regulations with regard to Modified cars and especially engine swaps in NSW. No one was able to actually give the correct information on the matter, as here is a general confusion about this topic (even on this forum). Especially when i was discussing the issue of putting older engines into your car. So I have this from the RTA: NSW Reg's Worth the read... Will clear up any confusion. Especially with the Growing NSW crew getting into engine swaps etc. Cheers, Azza

Read it...
Brakes Brake systems must not be modified such that the brake performance is reduced or that the risk of failure of the brake system is increased. Brake discs or drums must not be machined beyond the reconditioning limits set down by the manufacturer. When brakes are upgraded using components or systems which were not standard options for the vehicle,an engineering certificate is necessary to attest to the adequacy of the new system,eg:hydraulic fluid sufficiency, balanced braking on all wheels, brake pedal pressure limitations and braking performance Come under 'owner certified' if no modifications are done and when using oem equipment Rang an engineer, he said it was up for interpretation... That I am using later model Genuine Mazda equipment, and I did not modify the existing system in any way in order for these brakes to fit, and hub offset was not changed what so ever.

Rear brakes will require cert. as I am using custom cables and calipers are in a different mounting position than designed (flipped)
One the full brake upgrade is done, my suspension mods completed and my seats are in... I will actually be looking to get an engineers cert. done. Just to keep out of trouble

Engineer I spoke to mentioned all of this, actually was pretty aware if all the Mazda equipment. Was very informative, and they seem very willing for a chat

Your brakes were from an over seas model, not the Aussie model, so never got approval here in aus with those brakes, so wasn't an optional extra on the sp20. Technically on those terms you are in the same boat

Did you even read the thread title Phil? Modifications performed on QLD registered vehicles are irrelevant to this thread...

His points are still very much valid, it's good input. And he is going from the info linked anyway, which is the nsw regs.

How is it still relevant?
Is phils car currently registered in QLD? Yes, thus has to abide by QLD regulatory requirements, not NSW regs.

I've done brake mods before. Yes even Mazda 6 brakes will require a engineer cert. But it ain't that scary or hard to come by. He'll ask you a few questions. Put the car on a hoist and ckech it out. And drive around the block a few time stamping on the brakes.
Hand over your cash, you go home happy. |

But on your brakes bit. All of above is right. End of the Day. It's how you view it but the plain bit we went buy up till the mid 00's. Was if it was factory option you can do it. Eg - you own a VL - you put on VL V8 or Turbo brakes - Option for that model - ALL legal no inspection required. You own a Mazda and you use PBR twin spot Vt calipers or Mazda 6 calipers- braket or no braket - Certification required. It's not a option its not legal. It's not for the RTa to care either. We use to do Torana sawps from 202's to 308's and 253's all the time- No issue one $50 (it was $50) blue slip done that's it. Even in a Gemini drop in a G180 - no issue at all. Laser with Bp engine - drop in a BPt or if it had a SOHC B6 - same thing - drop it in add the brakes - maybe. Blue slip Done. TX3 option = No issues. But Once you go different to what EVER the rta has listed - Things change. they use to be more loose because they didn't always carry chassi or model numbers just model types. So said 323 has 5 engines sold here any of them fit. EG- SOHC DOHC was never listed. NOT an issue. There engine size issue etc all that different level. But end of the day I've always said it's not the RTA who are going to hurt you. RTA=RMS I should say It's the insurance company when your at fault in hospital half dead and they inspect the car during the investigation. You will not be covered. Then you have both insurance liability and depending on your accident - Police - court or even Coroner issue to answer. That is the real true issue. Defeacts well - if you havre bit body kit large wheels look like hoon - then yes expect them when your exhuast that is 110DB at idel. Don't be surprised. 90% of Internet complaining about these defeacts comes from these owners. Plus the morons who drive them like idiots. All these issues in the Best place in the world is not hard to over come. JUST PAY UP. That is all it is. You pay you have no issues. You pay for the paper work so you don't have to worry about a thing. |
