Slow crank to no crank
My BA 1.8l had always had a slow cranking starter--figured it was the battery. I replaced the battery about 18 months ago and it didn't seem to help any so I figured I'd be up for a new starter motor one day. Well, yesterday it wouldn't crank over--no solenoid clicking and the dash warning lights (including clock) dimmed when I turned the key, So I bit the bullet and got a new starter from repco and it still won't crank. I ran a wire from the positive terminal of the battery to the solenoid and still nothing--except for weird clicking noises from the engine that continued until I disconnected the negative from the battery. I charged the battery (not that it was flat) and cleaned the terminals and battery posts--the headlights still work and the dash lights still dim when I turn the key to start, but but no crank. Got a jump off my son's battery--same story. Pulled out starter and tested it (figuring I might have a dud)--working fine. Any ideas?

the starter is not getting enough cranking amps. i'd look at all the power cable connections for the starter motor.
