AVI to MPEG converter
Hi Everyone,
I took some video's on the new camera from the skidpan day, however they are in AVI format and around 170mb each.. Just wondering what programs (preferably free ) people use and what I should do to get the sizing down, namely so I can upload to youtube etc... Cheers Marc

dvd fab is also goot
also u can chuck them in to windows movie maker, one by one, and when you press export movie select the size option and keep putting it down untill ur happy with the output mb if the diff in mb is little (say 2) and the resolution changes go for the bigger one as it will look better (when it resizes that is ) |

It will resize when you upload it. But you will still need to upload the whole video. And there will be the option of HD or standard def when someone tries to view it.

You realise that AVI is a container right?
Your wanting to convert a file that is probably already in MPEG form of some sort into MPEG? What size are the videos in the first place? Id recommend using SUPER(http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html) i know it sounds like a kinda dodgy name but it is actually a pretty good program. Id recommend using H264 for obvious reasons (being MPEG4) much much better results at smaller bitrates (and hence smaller file sizes). Not sure what restrictions youtube place on uploads though Not that it should matter as the video is converted to a flash file anyways but thats neither here nor there. |

Windows live movie maker has a upload to youtube button and it actually seems to work quite well.
It also lets you resize and edit. And it was a free download and is rather easy to use. |

There's also a program called StaxRip that converts to Matroska [MKV] file format. It's great for HD content and you can select the output resolution and file size.
I recommend heading over to videohelp.com for some information. That's where I go whenever I need to research something. Adz

Handbrake is good. I use it to convert DVD rips ( see RipIt ) and to change the format/codec of video files.

I'd also recommend Freemake Video Converter. Lots of options/features and it is very fast if you have CUDA capabilities (any recent NVIDIA card) for a quick recode.
