adding a CAI will give you a bit or a growl.
There should be more info if you search here. |

So is it mainly the tip? One of my mates told me if i am gunna do something dont just get a tip coz it sounds crap. He said you really need to go the whole way though, thats what had put me off doing anything in the past.
But if i can get out of it for a couple of hundred bucks to make it sound good i will look at it |

Well I only changed the tip. The muffler and rest are all stock. Inside the car it sounds exactly same. Outside the car you hear a bit of a grumble note. However... The tip i chose is not overly big. Im assuming that crap sound your friend is talking about is probably if you go for 3-4inch tip... then yes you may need to change the rest so theres more flow through the pipes.
Link to pik of the tip i put on.. http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i8.../astina005.jpg

Yeah, MissyK, your comment RE the 3-4 inch tip would be right..... he has a twin turbo 300zx with a big exhaust the whole way through.

Oh yum... 300zx lol
Yea when I changed exhaust on my rx8, i changed the whole catback... and I know if i change the midpipe it would be even better. First I had 4inch tips on the rx8 wit the new catback and its nice grumble, sounds more like a rotary now. (now i got quad exhaust but). Not sure about the astinas, but I know on the hyundais and barinas as such when people place huge exhaust tips (such as cannons) they lose power??

The basic object of an exhaust system is to get as much gas out as quickly as possible. Smaller pipes create higher velocity but cant shift as much volume - thus creating backpressure as not all the gas can be evacuated from the cylinder before the next stroke, wider pipes dont give much velocity but can shift alot more gas at once. Its a trade off between pipe volume and exhaust velocity. |

If it's just the tip rattling then...
Everything has a resonant frequency. It's just a fact. That's why different things rattle on each dofferent note of a sub woofer. The larger your tip, the lower this frequency will be. If it's rattling heaps then it's probably not on tight enough. |

Mufflers often rattle when they don't have a resonator. I have a stock exhaust and my resonator rusted out so I got it replaced with pipe, now when my car is cold it starts to rattle at anything above about 3,500 rpm. Doesn't matter though because when the car is cold I don't rev it that high.

exhaust - probably no more than 2" cai - whatever fits - get as much cold air into the box as possible. A good idea for cai is to keep the standard airbox, get a K&N panel filter, remove the resonator boxes and run a pipe from the front guard up to the hole at the bottom of the box. Leave a small gap between the pipe and the box for a bit of extra growl or push the end of the pipe into the box for maximum air intake. |

Rule of thumb for CAI size, 125% the size of the throttlebody opening. |

Aren't most of the Astina/Protegé throttle bodies 55mm or so? The stock BJ exhaust is ~50mm (2") O.D. crush bent stuff. I wonder how well the ZE 60mm throttle body would work then, as it would be almost the correct size to offset a 50mm (2") O.D. mandrel bent system working on the 125% rule, assuming the intake manifold can support that volume of air anyhow?

With regards to simply replacing the tip, every exhaust expert I have spoken to (including people who aren't working for exhaust shops) has said that playing with the tip does little for the noise, and that the muffler and piping are responsible for most of the issue.
As Lordworm says, the piping does the most when it comes to backpressure and torque, and big pipes = crap performance on the 4cyls. This I know first hand, as the previous owner of mine upped the pipe size and the muffler size and it kills the low end torque, and makes Skitz beat me off the line running stock.
