no point risking carving out the plastic in the pink speedo gear... the thinner plastic means weaker, a risk of breaking once inside the gearbox

get it machined and welded like I did!

imo, i'd rather a weaker plastic speedo gear which *is under no stress* than a weaker diff which *is under stress*

the diff is weaker "under stress" without the welds, it's common knowledge

all of the open diffs are machined for the speedo gear from the factory... the castings were already there on the LSD, mazda just chose not to do it as it was unnecessary... machining the diff for the speedo gear just finishes off what mazda started

would you really want a hacked up plastic gear snap in two while it's inside the gearbox? No.

would you really want the diff to come in two when it's inside the gearbox? No.

whoever buys it, weld the diff and machine it for the speedo gear, then happily enjoy it for many trouble free miles

i'm not saying dont weld the diff, i'm saying dont machine it for the sake of the speedo gear. complete waste of time and you only need to take 2-3mm off the plastic speedo gear at one corner of it. and as i said, it's under 0 stress unlike the diff. not to mention the costs of machining a diff vs doing it yourself on the speedo gear. each to their own, but i wouldnt machine the diff just for the speedo gear's sake.

Suspension and brakes a good option

Ice88 buy the manual
it is a USDM shop manual... not all things apply to the aussie version, but there are lots of useful enough info that will work in many cases

all the useful things are there (i used the manual many many times), and if you're dumb as [insert your fav dumb person here], the things that are not universal are just the opposite, ie lhd to rhd

Off Topic- Saw your write up in Marchs Motor Mag about your car. Thats a good claim to fame. Love the bit about your son thinking it is the batmobile.

yeah i was pretty happy with how it turned out. there's the lotus club of queensland concours in may so i'll be cleaning up the car even more leading up to that. i already got rid of the vast majority of surface scratches (no thanks to the dealer), so another light polish and it'll be like new. the difference between then and now is already night and day, see below:
