Start with the speakers and headunit first and you'll notice a huge difference!
Phil, where are your splits mounted in the back? Just out of curiosity. |

I had, from the front back. DVD head unit, JL 6 1/2 speakers with custom kick plates with competion tweeters, 6 inch JL audio's in the rear doors, capacitor, ps2, bluetooth, power invertor, digital tv reciever, 2X 12inch kicker subs in a custom fibreglass and foam lined mdf box with seperate sub controller, kicker mono, kicker 4 channel, mx electronic crossover, all with comp grade wiring and fuses. It was a good system, but i sold the subs etc to a mate. (shame it went into a honda)

it's possible to remove the stock USDM/JDM tweeters from their covers and replace them with aftermarket units... I know the infinity ones fit

Regarding brands and stuff, what do you guys recommend? Or should I just hop into Frankies and have look around?

how much money are you prepaird to spend really is the question, go to frankies and see what they will hook you up with(get a quote) and then try OFE(oak flats electronics) and see what they will do. frankies stock from bench line brands like kenwood pioneer fusion and sony, and then go up to the better quality products like vibe, and O.F.E work with from clarion pioneer to focal and my personal fav Alpine, everyones ganna have there own oppininon on there fav brands, just depend on how much money you have, your most liked brand, and what your looking for in audio quality,
IMHO if you stick with the same brand the hole way through your car the final product (sound quality) will be better then mixed and matched branded componets

Personally im running a fair bit of Alpine. I also go with kenwood, pioneer, polk, option and some sony is ok. Sony do alright speakers, HU's are pretty basic.
Try and stay away from fusion and sony headunits. Its pretty cheapo. |

Eclipse or Alpine are the only head units I will consider
speakers? that's really subjective... my mate has Infinitys on his S13, with an old Eclipse head unit... sounds pretty good!

Alpine has a reputation for a reason.. Been around for years.. Good solid product and i've never heard anyone ONCE bag it out for being crap Build like Cookie mentioned - Rome wasnt built in a day so why should your car audio system Haighie mentioned product matching - if you go alpine.. go alpine speakers and amp cause thats what there designed to go with Your list is spot on i would go 6.5" components in the front (most speakers come with the adapters to go from 5x7 to 6.5") Like everyone else has said and ive said it aswell.. DYNAMAT !!!! get yourself a bulk pack normally in the $300- $350 range (10 sheets) depending where you get it from. Makes a world of difference |

recieved an extra bulk pack here today. if mat pulls out his finger its his, otherwise its up for grabs and I can get it down there via mat... I am keen to get someone to give it a go on their doors and keep the stock setup in and see how much better it gets... but I doubt anyone will do that!
i personally don't see ANYTHING wrong with missmatching brands. personally I've never touched alpine, because of the price, but its quality gear. most brands have a few tiers of product ranges. stay out of the cheapo stuff, which alpine probably sell too, eg. Cheap kenwood gear is garbage but their top of the range amps are good value for money/performance. just watch some manufacturers used 3 and 6 ohm speakers/amps, not sure if thats still happening but you must match it up properly (generally all the gear is 4 ohm stuff.)

Alpine has good reputation, but I don't like how their displays are too busy and their designs too flashy
Eclipse's designs are much more understated, and arguably, better audio quality Too bad Nakamichis are crap, and more so because of the price... otherwise I'd consider them because of their very conservative factory style looks like I said... either Alpine or Eclipse are the way to go, depending on what you're after

Pioneer DVD H/U JL Audio 5x7" speakers Pioneer 6" Rears Pioneer 4ch Amp Kicker 12" sub in ported box. Most of that stuff I bought over 6 years (october 2006 infact) ago now and still that was second hand, the front speakers were originally Gav's (in which he had for 6mths), and the Amp I bought off Boostlosing! Still cranks today, and I wouldnt say its an overly expensive system either, most expensive part being the DVD H/U I paid $1k for in 2009..

Personally I don't see why anyone would go for a 15" sub unless all they listened to was your standard hip hop. 12" is more versatile and is able to keep up with rock and d&b as well. I have the new Alpine 10" D4 but only because I listen to a lot of metal/hardcore and my old kicker 12" wasn't able to keep up.
To each their own, but the 10" and 15" are more specialised subs, the 12" is your all rounder. |
