Made in late 1996 or registered in late 1996? If made, then no idea as to the cause- probably Ryans suggestion.
And too much else needs changing for the gearbox for it to have been swapped by a mechanic just as a changeover

myn is made in mid 96, and i have the f-series higher reving box..

3000 rpm @ 100km/h sounds right. mine is 97 and it sits at just under 3000rpm @ 100km on 5th gear. just above 2000rpm @ 80km/h.
