It would be great if you can find anything - I've looked everywhere I can think of with no luck.

quick look shows the interior lights go to CPU 1 & CPU 2 which are housed in the Joint Box ( big box where the fuses and abt a million wires go in, just on the right of the driver's footwell ). Havnt got time to scan right now, but will do so this weekend hopefully.

Ok, after 4 months of no fading lights I'm determined to rectify the problem....

I have had a good look at the diagrams (thanks Dogo) and I'm hoping the problem is with CPU1

Sooooo....

This my friends is what the internal computer from behind the fuse box looks like...

So, now I have identified the 3 capacitors that might have blown - although I have no idea which one it is? I think I'll just take teh board to an electrical place and get them to test/replace them for me.

Bugger,

The more I look at it I think the issue may be with cpu2 (not cpu1 that is shown).

Does anyone know where I can find cpu 2 - I cant find it anywhere???

oooh coool. naked astina bits

according to wiring diags, cpu2 is a black box ( possibly small ) which looks to be mounted somewhere near the front of the joint box / cpu1

it has a 2x8 plug going into it and *maybe* a 1x2 plug.

2x8 plug is :

Code:
               ========
O    L/B  XX   XX   XX   XX   G/W  G/R
G/O  GY/R W/B  W/L  XX   XX   XX   G/O
( === is the clip )

and the 1x2 plug is :

Code:
   ==
B/L  W/L
if it wernt raining outside i'd go have a look for u

ah i think ive got it, in the books anyway ...

did the scans I gave u have 'Connector B' on them ? THATS cpu2

it looks to be the big fat plug ( not the flat one ) going into that circuit board. ( black socket in the pic )

100% sure thats it

Wow, heh, you guys are into really advanced stuff. 8)

Pernod, I'm just going to ask a simple question. What size neons did you use for the underdash? 12"? They look sweet.

Edit: Nevemind, found out. 15"!

Wiring Manual : p T-4

Workshop Manual vol2 p T3-10 'Connector B' is cpu2. 1&2 come under the heading 'cpu' in the workshop manual, but are called CPU 1 and CPU 2 in the wiring manual

The symptoms are that I accidentally shorted out the internal lighting wires (at the roof dome light) while wiring a switch for my neons.

I heard two clear clicks at the time. One of the was the interior lighting fuse, but the other wasn't to be found (they both sounded like they came from the same area).

Ever since that point the interior lights have not turned on when the door is opend/unlocked. (I actually then bypassed teh computer and ran it straight to the pin switch on the door just so they would come on when the door was open).

This has been driving me nuts, so I'm now on the hunt to fix this.

I am 99% confident that the second click that I heard would have been a capicator in the computer blowing (capicitors do not respond at all well to being shorted out!). This would make sence as the capicator would be required to make the lights have that dimming effect.

Thanks for the info dogo - I owe you one. I just about had everything out from under the dash looking for the 2nd cpu which appeared to be infront of the other - now that you have said that they are actually the same its clear in that diagram that the black bit it refers to is one of the black plugs that go in above the fuses!
(BTW, whenever your avatar is on my screen, my typing cursor dissapears???).

I'll try and get this fixed today - If I have any luck then I'll let you know (as I know of at least one other person taht said they blew up their fading lights as well - rupewrecht!).

Thanks again dogo!

Hehehe, its not that advanced - all i did was rip it out of the car (i'm going to get a pro to test them and fix them - not worth the risk of trying it myself).

Yep, 15" neons that were about NZ$20 ea (from The Warehouse, like a cheep k-mart for you auzzies).

A few of the other guys on here can probably tell you the best place to get them over there (im presuming your in oz?)

OK, the news is bad. I've just had all 4 caps tested (i found a 4th one hiding in the middle of the board) and they are all 100% fine?

I now officially have no idea about what it could be...

It might be time to make my own circuit to replace this?

You could have easily popped one of the power transistors - the things standing up with 3 legs near the green connector

This is definatley the only computer isn't it?

If so I might start randomly testing all of the other bits...

**EDIT** I am now armed with a much needed new multimeter - just wait till I get home and break out the soldering iron, then these lights will see whos boss!
