Yeah, that's when Mazda will tell you that your exhaust tip, eyelids, black taillights and subwoofer caused the damage...

UPDATE:
as im writing this, the car is at mazda getting looked at (taking the head off, looking at the damage & reporting back). supposedly i have a 70% chance that mazda will come to the table with fixing it etc, so thats a little bit of relief, but i still have my doubts...

UPDATE:
ok, got a little pissed off by the no reply from Boettcher Motors, so I rang them up, found otu that the head has been sent off to be cracktested (has something to do with the report & that Mazda HQ wanted it done) so its looking more like monday or tuesday before I will have a final answer... After a lot thinking over the last few days ( I have bugger all sleep since saturday night) that I will buy a gemini once my tax has come thru. Its becoming ever so hard to get to and from work over the last week and dont want this to happen for the next 3 weeks (oh gav I really feel ure pain!) Will update everyone once I know something... Marcus

car is not getting fixed thru warranty, mazda basically laughed at the claim, so im looking a ball park figure of around $4000 to get fixed... The car is gonna be taken elsewhere where i can get it done for around half the price mazda has quoted...

Oh that's BS! It's a known problem, and it's not like it's a service check item. What a crock of ****.
Sorry to hear Marc

This is what i just emailed to mazda...
Hi, My Mazda 323 was taken to Ian Boettcher motors with an engine failure of some sort, after 1 week of not knowing what it was, get a phone call this afternoon stating that the car will not be getting fixed under mazdas warranty as its deemed not a warranty issue. The problem with the car is the butterfly screws coming loose and possibly doing damage, in my case a lot. There was a service bullitin was done on all SP20's built between 01/03/03 & 01/09/03 to fix this problem, but clearly in my case my SP20 is built date, it didnt need to be done. I have a lot of friends that drive these cars (all on www.astinagt.com), and i have claims that this problem goes back to cars built in 1999! Seeing that my car was knocked back by mazda for any compensation due to my engine dying, please give me a detailed description as to what happened. Marc Greinke

you can get an FS from mazda auto recyclers that'll give you change out of $3k...if you are willing to put in some extra work, you can get a cheaper FS from a 626 and swap the stuff thats different over (cam and crank sensors, a few other bits of the harness so the SP20 ecu will plug in).
for $4k, you could nearly have the thing built! edit: if they were just going to laugh your claim off, what was with getting the head crack tested and so forth? hope your not out of pocket for unrelated/unnecessary tests. Pulling the manifold off and noticing that your VICS butterfly was missing should have satisfied them that it was the culprit for the blow up. Last edited by LordWorm; 12-07-2007 at 06:34 PM. |

Ask him if he'll use secondhand parts (where possible).

Thats mazdas quote, and its all new parts... just went and checked out the car myself, the butterfly flap is like in a million pieces sitting on top of the cat... The head has no damage, just has some pitting which will come out with a shave. The No. 4 bore tho will need a light bore. the floor foreman is gonna chase around to see if he can find some of these butterfly flaps cause there is anything wrong with the manifold itself!
The problem with teh sp20's that did get the recall was that the butterfly screws came loose, letting the flaps loose & subsequently digging into the alloy manifold, thus why they replaced the whole manifold in those effected cars, now mine hasnt got any indication of it wearing but there is still a bit of play in both the No. 1 & 3 butterflies... lol its funny how a $1 peice of metal can do $3000 worth of damage
