you could get by with this as you only need basic functions and you can easily use a numpad as a controller.
Damn this thread is growing fast. I really didn't think there was that much interest here about them. I will have to be the first here with one. I did have a car pc in my car years ago but removed it when I got my current head unit as it was faster starting and easier to use. |

ok... slight alternative.
i noticed theres a PS2 slimline install thread. how about PS3 slimline install? high def gaming with a HDMI screen. the ability to install linux on it to run ur actual carputer software. instead of a mouse u can use the joysticks? keyboard =

New PS3's have dropped the otherOS feature so no more linux. Also I wouldn't trust a PS3 in the car as I have heard a lot of bad things happen to them.

your RCAs on the headunit will be RCAs out not RCAs in...you need RCAs in to be able to use the carputer properly...

Your subwoofer should be plugged into line out or subwoofer out. If its not how does it work? The pic shows that you have a line input, my car does as well and thats how I have connected the rear view camera. My head unit also has a wire you connect to the reversing lights so it automatically shows the camera when you select reverse. |

Vibrations and heat will kill a PS3 in no time the optical drive and HDD
Also everyone is interested in a touch screen control so a PS3 wouldn't be capable of doing what most people want. Also their HDMI output isn't compatible with a VGA monitor. Personally I would rather use my PSP instead of a PS3 as it has tv out and is smaller and more reliable. |

now there is a thought whatabout a nintendo DS just mount it in the centre console.
seriusly tho i was considering making up something that will hold my iphone (b4 i sold it) in the centre console in landscape mode cus that way there is music and gps and internet. and all that needs to be hooked up is a charging AV out as it has lines for a amp (or 2) and u can run all the music throught it. still might go throught with it after i get the next gen iphone |

Marc here is a touch screen mod for your existing head unit
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12561 But I have these available if anyones interested as I am about thinking about importing gadgets and stuff in my spare time. It is a 4.3" LCD media player with FM radio and digital TV tuner, It also has AV out and can connect to your head unit via AV in. It plays MP3s and AVI's, mpegs, RMVB etc. I can get them for $149 for AGT members which is less than I could find them on ebay. Im looking for one that has gps as well but I can't find one with AV out. If anyones interested in one or another type of unusal gadget like a HDD wifi media player or even a ready to go carputer with 7" touchscreen or other toys PM me and I will see what I can find for you. while doing research 18mths ago i came across a forum with gadgets similar to the item listed above. there were some shoddy quality things but from memory there was one around $200 which was really good quality and had all the stuff youd want - no idea where i found it though, from memory it had RCA's out for video/audio, as well as digital radio, 8gig internal memory, had a pretty small screen though (3inch?) with GPS...

I have found a very cheap way of playing media in your car
It supports usb flash / hdd and SD cards. And they are less than $100 |
