17" or 18" wheels on 97 Astina hardtop?

Hi guys,

This is a great forum, I just joined!

I just bought a 1997 Astina Hardtop 1.8L. I want to upgrade my wheels form the ugly factory ones. I have 2 question if anyone can help me?

Q1: Dose anyone know what size is the wheels? I know its 4 studs but what’s the PCD?

Q2: Can I put a 18” wheel on it? Or 17” is the highest I can go as far as legally?

Thanks 4 the help guys appreciate it!

Welcome to the boards Jun!

Dan (Rupewrecht) is running 17s on his hardtop - Dans Readers Ride

There are a few other discussions about wheel sizes around the place - try the search tool at the top.

Some of the other guys might be able to add some more useful info as they've run wheels that big and bigger 8)

4/100 PCD with an offset of about 37

you can go 18 - it's just the width thats the hassle with insurance etc.

oh, and welcome

hi !

in my opinion, the wheel area is too wide on the astinas, go a nice big set of 18s to combat this

i feel 17s arnt really a big enough gain to really make it worth the hassle of having mags. to me, 17s say "i want big wheels coz theyre 'cool' but i dont really want them" ... but they do have the advantage over 18"s, that you can actually tell when the tire is flat

welcome, and enjoy the forums

Hi Mike, I from Sydney.

Yeah my original plan was to get a set of 17” but thought 18” might look better. I’m more into the look of my car then performance u see. Can’t make up my mind so came to ask u guys 4 some recommendation.

Dogo, r u sure 18” will fit ok on my 97 Astina? Cause I went to Bob Jane T-mart today and they told me that 17” is the biggest I can go.

I also thinking of lowering my car after the wheels. What do u guys recommend? Do I have to lower it more if I have 18” on?

Do u know anyone on this forum actually have 18” on there Astina Hardtop?

Cheers,

18"s DO LOOK BETTER !!!
Wouldn't go back to 17"s ever unless they booked me every other week for
them. Touch wood never been hassled by cops for having 18"s. Was followed
by an unmarked car through brighton and along Southern Cross drive I am
weaving through traffic not really speeding just maintaining speed and after following
me for about 5km's just pulls up beside me to let me know he's a cop and then
turns off. Touch wood all good !!

Regards

Mal

If your only interested in looks then find a design and go with it....
The 17's while not as big will give a nice ride
while
The 18's don't have the forgiveness and you'll feel way more bumps

Me, I'm sticking with the 15's or maybe 16's in the future if I don't upgrade to the 3 SP23

if they'd made my rims in 18's i would have got them. having said that, it's nice having some compliance in my ride and putting slightly less stress on my gearbox!

17 vs 18

18" wheels give a very harsh ride - I'm not sure how much tyre choice has to do with the harshness - or if its just purely the size factor.

I've got Toyo Proxies on mine and they grip really well - the car handles like its on rails. But hit some rough stuff and it'll rattle your teeth out! Maybe I'm just getting old.

The 18's are also very skatey in the wet - but this could be to do with the sway bar and strut braces.

The roads up here in North Queensland are probably a lot worse than you are dealing with down south though...
