What sort of tyre do you use on your Mazda 323 sp20?
I bought a sp20 earlier in the year and had to put 2 new tyres on it. I went to my mechanic who also does tyres and asked for basically just the cheapest one as my theory is, there's no point buying some high performance tyre if i can't drive to suit it!!!
He told me the cheapest he could find was a Kulmo tyre for $200 so I went for that. It sounded REALLY expensive to me and he explained that is was an "odd shaped tyre" or something like that..... I had to also replace the spare tyre a month or so ago and went to Bob Janes and they gave me a Maxxis tyre which apparently is absolute rubbish (but as it's a spare i don't care) for $150. Just wondering what other people use on their sp20's and why this shape tyre for the sp20 is apparently so unusual and expensive??? What does everyone think of the Kulmos i am using now?? Any recommendations for my next set of tyres? ( A long way away ) I am using stock rims by the way.....sorry for going on so much! hahaha |

I got expensive tyres on mine and they are grippy as hell. They are the Yokohama C Drive's at 195/50/R16 and they cost $210 a tyre but I could've got Kumho's for cheaper. My car isn't an SP20 but they should be about the same size from memory?

perhaps it will help if you tell us what is written on your tyres side wall right now?? because as it is we are assuming you have stock wheels.. but this might not be the case. the stock tyres should not be that expensive as it is certanly not a odd shape.

Ok, so i kinda presumed there would only be one size Kumho that fits that shape rim.
The tyre says on it 195/50R16 88VXL also says ecsta spt on it Does that help? Last edited by tom24h; 09-07-2010 at 10:52 AM. |

thats not a uncommon size by any stretch. they cost around 195 rrp (according to kumhos website), but there are other options than KU31 which is somewhat of a performance tyre hence it costs more (but is a good tyre)
why dont u go to bobjane and see what they can do? there are other brands that are cheaper (stay away from nankangs unless u like unpredictably loosing it with any hint of moisture) omg i edited this post like 5 times... Last edited by 70NYD; 09-07-2010 at 11:01 AM. |

Also, there are two types of Maxxis tyres MA-V1 (crap) and MA-Z1 (quite good). +1 to Gav's comment. Yoko C Drives are a darn good tyre. This topic has been gone over quite a few times. Search button is your friend

Yeah i just had a look, I have the crap Maxxis MAV1 but not to worry, only a spare
Why are this shape tyre for the sp20 so expensive? $150 for a crap tyre and closer to $200 for something half decent......how much are these Yoko tyres that are being talked about??? What happened to the days of picking up a tyre for less than $100? |

They are a low profile tyre, so $150-$200 a tyre is around what you pay these days...
A majority of the QLD members are running Kumho's and a good tyre, but can get them for around $130 each for 18" tyres from a shop here in brisbane You basically have 2 options for tyre size, being 195/50/16 (stock tyre size), or 205/45/16, with the latter being easier to find...

I vote the 205/45/R16 as they wider and cheaper.

I got a set of Bridgestone Potenzas with my rims, they're by far the best performing tyre i've ever driven on. Although you would hope that'd be the case at $300 a corner . I'll be buying these when they wear out though, they work great when you want to have grip (wet or dry) and if you have to stop in a hurry you won't need ABS anymore, even in the wet Highly recommended for both performance and safety.

ive had the ma-z4's and they are simply AWESOME. dunno if they make them anymore though as i had to look hard and eneded up getting them from bobjane from my mate... better than the kumo 31's which im a little dissapointed in, given the praise they recieve here, but at $80 less per tyre i think they are still good value.

I have Kuhmo KU31s on the front of my car, the have had 5000 km since I got them and so far im really happy.
I wore them in on the skidpan day. They are a good tyre, they have heaps of grip in the dry and in the rain they are really good. I paid $160 for a pair of them fitted and balanced on my car. But mine are 215/40 17's |

prolly not but they saved my ass from running into someone who clearly didnt know how to use a roundabout. since that episode i dont care how long they last, as long as they grip well in wet/dry conditions.

The MA-Z1 and KU31 are nearly the same in every aspect. A while back when I was thinking of changing tyre brands, I compared both. Tyre life, compounds used, grip etc were all within 5% of the KU31s. The price was also 5% cheaper for RRP. But since O1G offer the Kumhos are stupidly low prices, The KU31s won that battle. 215/35R18 KU31 = 360 wear rating $295ea 215/35R18 MA-Z1 = 330/340 wear rating $270ea O1G KU31 price = $152!!! |

Good point, Z1 = 280 AA A, Z4 = 420 AA A.
I also wasn't happy that the Z1s had not centre stability strip present. The Z4 does. Which is a must for FWD cars. Last edited by project.r.racing; 12-07-2010 at 02:06 PM. |
