Rubber Selection
I'm looking at getting new tyres on, just wondering what people think are good...looking for somthing that performs well in wet and dry but preferable with a fairly long life cause i do a fair bit of driving...and also where the cheapest place to get tyres these days? need 205/45/16

heaps and heaps available in that size. very popular.
i have the toyo proxes t1-s and love them. they have been replaced with the t1-r's now. i will be getting t1-r's next time around too. others will tell you what they use and like, just remember everyone has their own preference and budget. |

i think the t1-s's were about $190ea at a fantastic price. you may be very lucky and find some left as they are now older tyres. i'd say if you can the prices would be fantastic.
however i just have to point out that awesome handling and good tyre wear dont mix. my preference is always to handling and therefore safety. afterall, the tyres are the only thing holding you to the road. if it's a case of new tyres every 15k-20k so be it. my original sp20 tyres lasted 60000k's (damn!!!) |

i was thinking of around the 20 mark would be good, and you are right id rather be safer then have a tyre that lasts 80k, thanks for the help ill have a look around see what i can come up with

i'm on about 12000-13000k's with my t1-s's now. they are still pretty good, goot for another 8000 easy. and that's with 2 trips to the drag racing and numerous accidental clutch dropping instances

I had Kumho's on the laser and they sucked...wore really quick and the traction wasn't that spectactular with them. Arse end steped out a few times and yeah, didn't help the wheel spin up front at all.
The federals on the astina are doing very well. Wear is going very well considering the floggin they get. Different profile series...not sure how/if that will make a differnce.

i think it would make a difference because of the sidewall strength. if the sidewall isnt very strong on a say 35 series tyre, it wont anywhere near as noticeable on a 50 series tyre (assuming they use the same sidewall strength)

ive had nankang ns-1's and they are **** no traction and wear qick to. i have kumho ecsta 711 at the moment they arent to bad for 150 a tyre only problem ive found is they have a square side wall which doesnt go well wid super lows and non rolled guards. but grip wise not to bad. charlie s bends at 100 no worries (but im a sensible driver so neva tested that :-)

Im on Federals like Rob and they have copped what I have thrown at them on the nose and never complained. They have a good mix between wet/dry/wear and the price was nice

Heard alot of good things about Federals, tireshop I went talked made em sound crap "you could just get a cheap tyre like a federal or something", but since then nothing but praise from all sides.
I suggest you have a look at them, I ended up getting 4 Firenza ST-03 fitted and balanced for $600. they are V Rated 205/16/50 so yours would be cheaper. |

i've got the same size 16" tyre, highly advise against toyo proxy z4, although they may last alot of k's, the grip is poor and in the wet they are REALLY DANGEROUS.
Goodyear Eagle F1 are a nice choice for handling & mileage. I'm probably going to choose BF goodrich g-force sport for my next set which is pretty soon. |

i have kuhmos excta mx the top of the range ones, thay had better grip and feel than the michilon(yes i cant spell) they lasted about 50000ish which is very good, i also did a fair bit of sprited mountian driving.
im gettin the new goodyear revspec rs-02's put on on fri, these are takin over from the f1's and in 215/45R17 were only $250 a tire and they won wheels performace tire of the year, they were $60-80 cheaper then anyother jap tyres(eg yoki, bridgestone) i dont know how they will handle yet so on fri i will find out
