2003 SP20 VICS Special service
Just in case some of you guys are not registered with Mazda.....
For SP20's that qualify (see below) there is a free service to fix a problem with the VICS butterfly valve, where after a bit of time it comes loose. normally it will only rattle a bit and make the car run a bit worse. But in the worst case some cars have had the butterfly get loose and try to make its way a little closer to the piston then it should. Applies to: SP20's built from 03 March 2003 - 01 September 2003 VIN: JM0BJ10S200232221 - JM0BJ10S200244613 (according to their numbers my car is in the last 100 of SP20's built, woohoo about that time they probably got slack and QA went out the window! )

i've been meaning to do that myself for ages. all they'll do is take it off and loctite the screws in.
are you sure it's just march 03 - sept 03? |

Thats all the notice says. I'm guessing they'll only do it for free for cars built in that time period.
I forgot to mention that the guy at the local dealer mentioned something about replacement. I'm not sure if it's a better part or just replacing something as it was worn.

I don't remember posting it, but I did have a little bit of the system break off and pass through. I was VERY lucky it didn't kill anything. Occured about 1 km after leaving the dealer for the 20k service.

my stock motor let go this way... pulled up to a set of lights and stepped on the clutch... sucked a screw into cylinder number 2 i think... it actually didn't do any real damage at all... (the screws are copper so it just flattened and made lots of noise... the head was fine and so wsa the top of the piston... but to be safe i took it apart and while i was at it went forged.....
If i was NA it would have just melted and blown out the back.... luckily for me it didn't make it to the turbo.... Bora (TDK) took my advice and had it taken off and looked at and the butterfly's were already missing 1 screw and a few were loose from memory so i would consider it pretty high on the priority list if your out of warranty and have a lack of $$$... i had the butterfly's come loose twice with high boost so i just replaced the whole inlet manifold as it wasn't giving me much since i wasn't NA anymore i didn't need the extra top end.

whats the rattle sound like....we have a funny rattle but it seems to be more the bumper rattling as it goes away when I push on a section of the bumper but I've been suspecting its caused indirectly by a rattle somewhere else.
I don't get how the recall is for certain models when other ppl are reporting it in older ones, I will definately be asking about it next service in Feb, just wondering whether to bother getting it looked at earlier. |

Wouldn't have a clue what the rattle sounds like, but I must say that if anything does get loose and make its way closer to the engine you'll be saying "ohhhh S$%T!" - I know I did

I wouldn't be so sure about them not caring with the older models
I saw mitsubishi do a recall on hatch lid struts from cars going back to 1993. If its a safety issue they will issue a recall. Rob

i don't see how it would be considered a major safety issue...
the engine has a very slight possibility of beating the crap out of the top of a piston and maybe a valve..... on an NA car it would just keep chugging away... the actuall chance of it being the end is actually pretty low...

hey kids had the same prob with my sp20!! i took off from the servo and it just started missin?? so took it to the dealership where they replaced the plugs, apparently 1 had the end broken off(you think that would of been the giveaway that somethin was up??) then they sent me away after drivin from griffith nsw to melbourne vic and back it started it allover again so i goes back and they want it over nite so i come back to leeton only to get a call 45min later tellin me she right to go only needed a new set of plugs(again you think it would of a giveaway that somethin was up??) i get halfway over and the service manager ring up and tells me they can see metal in my no2 cylinder!!! so i rings up next day and they imform me that there is a screw off the butterfly in there as well and 2 ends of 2 spark plugs(hello morons!!) gets my car back 2 weeks later wif a brand new head and a new set of headers and cat!!(apparently they found fragments all the way through the headers and cat??
