Valve Stem Seals

I own a Mazda Astina 1997 model 4 cyl 1.8lt

Can anyone tell me for sure if the Valve Stem Seals can be changed without taking the head out by a qualified mechanic

I am sure that my seals are worn as the car is smoking in the morning only however when the car is hot it does not smoke unless I rev it to at least 5000 rpm or more does this mean my piston rings are worn ? or is it the valve seals as well.

My compression is fine is there a reason to worry about the smoking in high revs ?

Also I lose about 1 liter for 1000 km which is influencing the most the rings ? or the valve seals ?

What colour is the smoke from ya car in the mornings?
You need to do a compression test wet and dry to determine condition of the motor
What grade oil is being used in the motor as to thin oil in old motor will burn it and blow smoke

by the time my engine was retired, i had 40W-70 in it and it still blew blue smoke for 90 seconds after start up and above 5000rpm.

now i'm running 15W-40 and no blue smoke.

yeah gear oil was the next step...

still sitting on the workshop floor. might rebuild it with supertech 85.5mm bored pistons. nothing like a 11:1 comp ratio and 110cc increase to make it a little screamer.

depends on what is required doing. if the engine has been run on low oil levels, then some machining of the crank may be required. but is you are pulling the engine out yourself, maybe around $2000. send maztech a pm, maybe he can help you out.

if you have the mech know how to fit and remove an engine, it be cheaper to just replace the engine with a low km one. low km BA engines go for $750-$1000.

i remember my valve stem seals were goneski's in my old KF 1.6 laser... god damn... would fill the street with blue/white smoke on startup, then be perfectly fine after 2-4 minutes.

my SOHC BP is a "little" bit worn, it doesnt smoke much at all, except of course for 5000+ rpm throttle blips.

I have done a compression test and all my cylinders seem fine. I have done wet and dry. I think it was 190 for dry and 210 for wet all even in all cylinders.

My car is definitely smoking blue smoke in the morning and seems like the same colour at 5000+ rpm. Is it then possible that it is the stem seals that make the car smoke at high revs.

When I used magnatex it definitely smoked less in the morning. I am currently using 30-70 and it smokes more than magnatex in the morning. If my memory is correct it smokes the same at high revs. The only reason I stopped using magnatex is because I lost too much oil. I would have to refill 2 times per week. Now I refill every 6 weeks or so.
