Air Con Problem

I've been having some issues with my air con recently (2001 BJII). So recently if I put the air con on while the car is idling at the lights it'll try to stall out (but never actually does) and the throttle will be rough. When i'm actually driving, I can feel the air con clicking on and off constantly which is quite annoying as it sucks the power quite badly. I've noticed when I had the bonnet up that the compressor only seems to want to kick in for a second before going off all the time.

The gas in the system has only been redone about 3 months ago. The aircon seems cold for the times that it does manage to come on. Any suggestions to track down the source of the problem?

Gas... May have been done recently but that doesn't meen it was done properly.
Sounds like you have a hole somewhere which needs to be fixed first. A good a/c shop should be able to run a trace gas in the system and use a sniffer to find the problem before filling it back up. Be prepared to dig deep though

I've recently just lost all my gas, how much should I expect to pay for a trace, simple valve failure and regas, I only had the entire system replaced 18 months ago

I have not needed it done in many years and I forget the price. Was back when I had the 280ZX.
Now off to the local car A/C shop to ask some advice to get my A/C running.

Just called up reddevil and was quoted $130 for a dye and regas, most likely an o ring. Might open the valves and see if ones cracked. Last time they charged me $12 for one fitted. Thought that was steep!

Pressure switch from sound of it. if it's clicking on and off.

The pump is over ridden by it reason for on off. it's either failing or the system is not right

That's good for air con. Mine goes in next Thurs for pressure test, receiver/dryer and gas. Receiver/dryer because the system sat open before I got it.

Dropped it off at Red Devil earlier today. Bloke there said that the high pressure levels were super high and is fairly sure it's a blocked filter. Said the gas levels were fine. He's changing it out and giving the system a clean and dry. $300

This is a good reminder that compressors, alternators etc are parasitic loads on the engine and rob it of power, hence the idle up feature when loads come on, like lights etc. So a blocked filter would load up the compressor and therefore the engine. I learned to fly before I learned to drive, and I never really understood this until a standby alternator system failed and loaded up a turbine engine so much it would not accelerate above idle. It's easy to to see in a car, just by watching the idle carefully when applying loads. If the idle up function isn't working properly, the engine would bog down a bit.

So if you want every tiny bit of power possible for some reason, turn off all unnecessary loads.

Air now re-gassed for $100 +tax
Heater core flushed for $60 +tax
Best to ring around and check before hand as prices may vary between shops.
