Lightbulb HOW TO: Replace steering wheel

simply a guide for replacing the stock wheel with another as it gets old in a BA astina.

You will need:

10mm ring/open spanner
10mm socket + ratchet
21mm socket
125mm extension bar

Firstly get your car in the shade with the steering wheel pointing straight.
Pop the bonnet, use 10mm ring spanner to release the negative clamp on the battery. return to the car and do something that usually requires electricity to work to drain any capacitors in the ecu etc.

OLD wheel held together with tape:

Use the 10mm socket to undo 4 bolts holding the centre of the steering wheel in. they were easy to undo in my car.

CAREFULLY lower the centre until you see the wires for the horn/airbag. remove them from the clip to get a bit more length and simply unclip and put somewhere you won't stand on it.

Grab the extension+ 21mm socket and while holding the wheel undo it. it is on rather tight. once loose, unwind until the nut is flush with the thread. DO not remove it completely.

Now, the easiest way to get the wheel off I've found after doing it 4+ times is to get the back of the breakerbar/ratcheting thingo and while pulling on the top, hit the bottom of the wheel. usually comes off within a few hits. didnt cause any damage on mine but use due care.

Once off simply replace with a new one without turning the clockspring (the bit of plastic which looks like an arrow) and then re-tighten the 21mm nut. plug the airbag module in and tighten the 10mm bolts.

NEW leather one from the wreckers. only $20!

Re-attach the negative wire on the battery and hey presto, a wheely good job.

Hey cookie nice one! Mine is the standard 'plastic' type that is totally worn too and I was also planning to change it, and being a non airbag model I was considering an aftermarket wheel but this one is pretty cool!

Which models come with the leather wheel as standard? I need to start checking out the wreckers!
