Timing Belt Replacement
Got my mechanic report today and somehow it seems my timing belt is overdue for replacement. I'm sure this = bad = expensive. Did a quick search and found Astro's Gates Racing timing belts for sale. From what i read it's 3 times stronger, does this also mean that it will last longer than the typical 50k?
Also i notice people adding other things to their shopping list like pulleys kits? (these are to reduce drag on the engine, increase in power?) What are convenient additions while the timin belt is off to save money on labour and make the most of what sounds to me like another costly adventure. My car is a 97 BA, engine is the standard bp 16v dohc.

Worth thinking about changing the water pump. If it were to fail then it's off again with the timing belt again.
Adjustable cam gears is another item to consider as well as under drive pullies if you're interested.

I imagine water pumps are just a standard (OEM non aftermarket) thing to replace?
Are adjustable cam gears something that a mechanic can install and know what to do to make it perform properly or is it a tuner job. With the under drive pullies, I imagine they don't create a charging rate problems for the ba?

Cam gears are a tuner job and under drive pullies may cause a charging problem in city traffic.

Leaving it any longer than this is just being a fool to yourself, as it will be costly when the belt snaps and bends valves! Unless your motor is a timing chain motor that your talking about? cheers, bozalina |

nope its a belt as its a bp motor, wont bent valve tho due to bp engine being non-whatever its called. valves dont touch pistons etc. just be a PITA when i'm stuck on the side of the road.

Non-interference. And it's true - they don't connect. I speak from experience!

its called a free spinning motor i think, and wouldnt it just be easier to change the belt so that your not stuck on the side of the road with a broken belt?
My 2c worth, not trying to shoot anyone down, just seems odd! cheers bozalina |

i do alot of club motorsports with it, if poop happens to it, so be it. i'm not that worried. i treat it harder than anyone on here has before, or come close.
i'm not saying don't warry about it, but it's lasted 232,000km, so anyone with 105,000 or 205,000 and are 5,000 over due, i wouldn't stress too much. and mazda say each one is good for 130,000km. dunno about aftermarket versions tho??? ryan |
