KL-ZE Engine Swap

I've been reading about people doing KL-ZE engine swaps into there Protege's. From what I could find out there on the world wide web I don't think anyone has put one into a late model BJ series in aus. I currently drive and 03 SP20 which I think goes pretty nice for a little 2L pocket rocket. But the engine isn't going to last forever and it doesn't really have all that much power. So my question is to you, has anyone is Aus put a KL-ZE engine in there protege?? How hard was it and what sort of $$ are we talking?? Apparently the engine mounts right in to the existing mounts?? If so, this will only encourage me to do this swap more.. I find that when you have to start making your own custom mounts it gets a bit expensive.

Also apart from the FS-DE, FS-ZE and possibly the KL-ZE what other engines are compatible with minimal modification to mounting brackets and K-frame?

Cheers,

the FE3 will physically fit, but requires the turbo diesel mount brackets and the turbo diesel gear box, which in turn requires you to swap the gears in that gear box to get you the correct gear ratios... the turbo diesel BJ was only available in europe, this makes it even harder!

it is probably the most ultimate swap and last swap any one would do

FE3 will need to be from a Kia to be legal which makes it somewhat poo.

KL-ZE dont expect much if any change from about 6k. EDIT: Should note this pends of if your doing the work yourself.

Either modify Sp20 as per your original thread or rebuild it (or KL as they will end up similiar in cost). Just cause it doesn't have a head built by honda or yamaha doesnt mean that they wont be great bit of fun with a few mods. No one bar Orion or myself in that thread has driven an NA JDM FS with some good gear on it.

Where bouts in NSW are you from?

the Kia heads are Poo Poo, no where near as strong as a FE3 mazda motor.. but that depands on what your going to do with the FE3.. leave it NA or Turbo it..

me personally id go for a FS-ZE as its easier to find, cost half as much to swap into a sp20, with the right exhaust and ecu you can make 140hpish (think thats what phills pumping out atm) at the wheels.

I would say it will be almost impossible to find a 2003 KL-ZE to put in your car to keep it legal as the KL-ZE was sold in very limited numbers in 2003.
AFAIK it was only used in the 4WD capella wagon and the kl-ze option was not very popular. Also NSW laws will make it very hard to comply.
I have completed a full ECU and engine swap from a Mazdaspeed Familia and with my new exhaust I should be putting out around 140HP ATW.
My best dyno result so far is 135hp ATW which is the same as a SP20 puts out at the flywheel.

No change to sp20 from 01 to 03 and no change to klze from 01-03.
meet same emissions requirements.

You can find them and they are exy.

Had everything ready to go (as in sourced and ready to order)
But then I decided it was stupid to spend that money on an sp20 and bought the mps.

Best move I have ever done

Swap was going to cost 7k for rull swap and engineered etc in nsw
