SP20 - viabration in gearstick

Hi guys,

I was just wondering if it is normal to get a viabration through the gearstick in a new 03 SP20, or is there something wrong?

I drove the car today after buying it last week, i havent actually picked it up, but will do so next week.

Send a message via ICQ to BigBoyLemonade
drive a RWD car like 200sx or GenIII V8 and you will think your vibration is nothing...

The base of the gear stick is attached to the body by a rubber block and to the gear box by a rod (no pun) so that when the engine-gearbox moves around it doesn't pop out of gear.
BTW welcome to AstinaGT and I hope you enjoy your new Astina

LMAO @ Odd Rod!!!!!

Must admit I haven't noticed bugger all vibration thru my gearstick, except for basic engine follow thru vibration.....

I hope that's all you have got.... nothing graunchy or really grabby/rattly... otherwise if it were me, I would be asking the dumb question at the dealership.

I am not scared of asking the dumb questions!

Hi all,

Newbie here and digging through these old posts as I have recently purchased an 03 BJII 1.8 Protege manual and am having a similar issue.

While stopped at lights with hand resting on gear, the vibrations go up my arm and numbs the hand after a few minutes. Is it normal for this car?
The only other manual car I drive is an old express van and there's virtually no vibrations on that.

I vaguely recall the mechanic saying something about a worn engine mount at the last service. Maybe this is part of the problem? Also the car kicks a bit when the aircon starts.

Any opinions would be appreciated

cheers

My 99 1.8 does it as well, and I remember reading a review a while back, which specifically noted that as a con.

if you have worne engine mounts your whole car will shake when you are stoped n idling. literaly it will feel like there is a continues bass being pumped - the sound. even the rear view will shake. thats worne mounts. n its a easy job to fix if you get a engine crane

BJ's are known for tearing the front and right side engine mount rubbers. Have a look for torn rubber at those mount's, it's easy to see/feel. If you replace them with firmer aftermarket ones, be prepared for more vibration issues. I've done all mine and have to turn the AC off while idling and hold the rear view mirror while cruising to focus the image. I suppose the Twiggy Cams don't help with the idle though.

I would almost class AWR mounts as a handling modification, as they make a noticeable improvement when they prevent a couple of hundred kg of engine flopping around the engine bay when on and off the gas quickly.
