Service holes are the big holes in your door which manufacturors create to allow things such as central locking and the opening and closing locks of your car door to operate.
Just like this one Basically just big useless holes cut by machines that are waaay bigger than necessary, just to be safe Best to cover them up - but be sure not to intefere with the locking system of your car, or you may find one cold night that it won't be working Heb Last edited by Hebz; 13-07-2007 at 03:44 AM. I did this a while back because I have a huge drone coming from the exhaust. Put dynamat extreme in front doors, rear doors and on the boot side of the back seat. Also put some on the underside of the parcel shelf and in the spare wheel (sub port..lol). Makes the stereo sound awesome when the engine is off!!! But still the drone. Just last night though I grabed a bit of 9ply (I have a BA Hardtop) and cut to fit / cover the stupid hole that is behind our seats. There is a gap between the seats and the metal surround. It sits very nicely in there, and now the partner and I can have a nice little chat as I drive..... cut the sound down by about qaudripple the dynamat.

I think he's talking about the hole behind the seats, into the boot.
When you fold down the back seats you're looking right through it. Im going to experimnet with my hatch - I think the boot lid and rear panel let a lot of noise in |

lol i know what hole hes talking about now, i was thinking it was near the front seats, god i can be dumb sometimes.
rup, havent deadened anything yet, havent had time.. what do you mean by deaden the struts? use deadening on the firewall or deaden the struts themselves? deadening the doors will be soon though, i made new speaker spacers and everything so i've just got to deaden them now.

Ah, was meaning Dave = Dogo
But the rear strut towers are a big source of road noise from the rear, as i discovered after having no interior in the rear for a few weeks.

Yeah sorry for not making it clearer, on the hardtop when you fold down the seats we have what looks like a port opening to the boot. Noticed the other day when the girl was getting something out of the boot that I could hear it all loud and clear right through the seats and there was almost and echo. So came to the conclusion that the seats do sqaut for soundproofing the boot which can act like a huge sub (woofer) box. Had a peice of wood hanging around and propped it up in the boot and it made a huge difference so then made something up, not pretty but it works a treat.
Not sure what you hatch guys have behind the seats though, assume it is nothing. But you could try to put some sort of board behind your seats and I think some on this site have put a decent bit of wood as their parcel shelf. That would help, but I am talking about exhaust noise, this will do very little for road noise.

my strut towers have *some* deadening on them but do have sound barrier carpet underlay all over them.
When I did the boot I ran the carpet underlay all through the boot ( except the lid ... so far ) including the floor, walls, wheel well etc and even between the back seat side cushions and the walls. But my boot lid is missing some plastic covers ( to access the reverse lights ) and it seems very hollow in there. I wouldnt mind filling the rear panel with expanding foam and deadening the boot lid too. Stupid loud exhaust |

I don't mean to be a weight weanie...
But sound deadening material needs to be heavy to work right? How much weight are you adding to the car by doing the doors and boot? |

i'm using mdf spacer, mdf to fill the service holes and it will have stinger extreme or whatever (i've forgotten what one in particular) for the front doors. dunno what it'll weigh all up. want me to chuck it all on the scales when i do it in 2 weeks time?
i'd say take out the spare and you'll have less weight all up. anyone here used one of those instant puncture fix cans? the ones that fill the tyre with foam and plug the hole. are they ok for low profile tyres?

Hrmm. Dynamat extreme is 2.2kg per m2. (Its only 1.7mm thick!!!) So i guess you wouldn't be using any more than about 8kgs worth…
I probably have about that in miscellaneous first aid/recovery gear etc in my boot. I guess its pretty insignificant given the overall weight of the car, and i'd love to get ride of my 2,500rpm drone when the engines under load… |

I'll be sound deadening my SP in the next few weeks. Has anyone tried using a liquid deadener? From what I've read, they take longer to apply than the mat rolls (multiple coats, have to wait for each coat to dry), but are stacks cheaper and equally effective.
Alternatively, has anyone here used either RAAMaudio BXT or Second Skin's Damplifier? They're based in the states and their websites don't show whether they ship internationally. I sent them both emails but haven't heard back yet. |
