Tyre comparison

My OEM Yokohama A-460's are now down to about 1/4 the original tread and I figure that I'll need new rubber in the next year (at the most).

I'm looking at either the Yokohama C.Drive AC01 or Toyo Proxes T1-R.

Links:

http://www.yokohama.com.au/ourtyres/tyre.aspx?tyreid=66
http://www.toyo.com.au/proxes%20t1-R%20page.htm

But then I saw the Toyo Proxes R888 and thought "wow, street legal partial slicks".

Link:

http://www.toyo.com.au/Proxes%20R888%20Page.htm

However, what would the R888's be like in the wet? And when they're cold? Toyo claim they have "predictable behaviour when cold". How believable is that statement?

Also, what are your opinions on the three tyres?

The R888 are excellent in the wet, but there's no need to go for racing tyres, becaues on the road, they don't get up to their optimal temperature and you'll wear them out quick...

Look at the Khumo range!

the c.drives are the replacemnet for the A539s and wear is much improved, I used c.drives in our SP20/Sports ed for about 15,000km and much better than the OEM, don't wear badly either like the OEMs do.

If you were going to use Toyos get the TR-1s...you'll never look back.

I gotta say my Proxes T1's are the best tyre I've had for wet conditions. And even in the dry they're damn good. Dry and wet performance combined = best tyre I've had. Grip is a lot better than my old yokies too. Takes more force to spin those wheels now. Couldn't recommend them more!

I haven't enquired on prices yet, when I do, I'll be asking about the Michelin Preceda as well (just out of interest).

c.drives in stock SP20 wheel size are about $175...T1-Rs were close to $200, stock OEMs are $200. tyrepower did the best prices in SE melb when i was asking around, but that of course can change.

Be prepared for Michelins pilot precedas to be significantly more.

Wheels 2005 tyre test.

Wondering what Wheels magazine's verdict was for the best tyres? After two days testing over 70 tyres at the Calder Park Thunderdome, a performance tyre from Goodyear, the Eagle Revspec RS-02, came out on top. It's the second win in a row for Goodyear; last year its Eagle F1 GS-D3 was declared the Wheels tyre test winner.

Published in Wheels magazine's May 2005 issue, this year's test presents a thorough shakedown of the quality brands offered on the Australian market. Headed by Features Editor and safety debate convenor, John Cardogan, the test is now in its third year.

In the 2005 running Wheels tested nine 215/60R16 tyres on a Ford Fairmont to represent the family car owner. The result showed that there is less than five per cent between the top and bottom performer. It was close, but there was a clear winner.

Not forgetting the sports sedan buyer, nine premium 235/45R17 tyres were tested, this time on the Commodore SV6. Again the result was close at under five per cent between first and last place.

Based on six objective performance tests, using appropriate experimental controls combined with rigorous data collection and analysis, the Wheels Tyre Test incorporates onsite expert advice from technical representatives from no less than eight of the world's premium tyre manufacturers.

Between them the brands tested account for 70 per cent of the Oz replacement tyre market. This fact alone ensures that the outcome is relevant - whether you are a private or fleet buyer.

The 2005 Wheels Tyre Test is published in the May 2005 edition of Wheels magazine, in newsagents now.

The results of that Wheels test was interesting. The Toyos didn't rate too highly, yet several people here swear by them. I take it they're still pretty good tyres?

I spoke to Arden and he suggested I also check out the Maxxis MA-Z1 Victra that did quite well in the tests. Might try them out if I can find them in stock.

i'm thinking of trying the MA-Z1s still. Bob jane stock them, and they're under $180 for 215/40/17s last time i checked (as a price guide)

Remember that price didn't come into it, 3 tyres above the Toyos are $350.00 or higher priced tyres compared to $300 a pop for the toyos, not a hard decission to make. although i never seen toyos at that high prive before either, i wonder where wheels get their tyres from, cos they are expensive wherever it is.

hmmm, I have GS-D3 and Tim (CRA23) has the rs-02's and we both dont like what weve got, so i dunno about the test results there...its hard to try before you buy. I think the biggest issure with the goodyears is that they have soft sidewalls so they dont feel particularly responsive, even though they are grippy. I do feel that mine are getteing better as they wear though, now about 8000km on them.

I have heard and felt great things about the yoko avs-102's. They last, dont squeal and feel solid.

the reason the rs-02s won the test is because they put a hell of a lot of emphisis on wet and tyre wear, living in qld it dont really rain that much and when it rains i dont drive like a tool, in the dry the kumho ku-1s5 kicked the goodyears arses by a long way. the only reason is they gave me a deal where could get the goodyears for $250 a tyre for 215/45R17 the kumhos were like $70 more a tyre

my next tyres will either be the kumhos again or i will get some Advan neova AD07s from japan, cheapst ive found them is around 850ish for 4 in 215/45R17 with out shipping.

if you but the good kumhos they are good if you buy the cheap kumho they are **** same with most brands exect goodyear where everything is crap. the new kumho SPTs look good and ive read some good reviews of them

heres a review from the american magazine car and driver, its a pdf and tests 11 of the top tyres
