1.6 bj cam questions.

hey guys, just a few questions. If i was to get a set of cams re ground, would it need a programable ecu? Is there anything i need to pair it with? How much would it cost for a new pair of stock cams? What about the cost of getting them re ground? Thanks for any help guys, as if the cost isnt too bad ill look into somewere local than can do it.

if you get a mild regrind, then no ecu needed.
but if you go something crazy, then yes ecu required.
regrinds cost $150-$300 per cam, depending on what is done.

Intake cam duration 226° @ 0.003"
Intake cam opening 1° BTDC
Intake cam closing 45° ABDC

Exhaust cam duration 233° @ 0.003"
Exhaust cam opening 52° BBDC
Exhaust cam closing 1° ATDC

Valve overlap 2°

bugger all over lap on the cams. hence why the ZM is so torquey for it's size. increasing the duration of the intake cam to 233 and having a overlap of 9 will help it sound more meatier. but you'll need alot more overlap to make it sounds like a race car. you'll drop some mid range torque, but gain some high end rpm power.

increase the time/duration that the cams are open means more air is going into the engine. so more air + more fuel = more power. most mild regrinds gain 10-15kW.

the example i gave above for a very mild increase. a 7 degree increase isn't worth the $$$ spent on regrinding.

most engines can handle a 15-20 degree increase without any timing/ecu changes. But knowing where/how much to put the increase ahead or behind TDC/BDC is the challenge. Do you know of anyone/where that has modded the ZM engines?

nope. no-one touches them. only a few guys in america have turboed them.
in aust there is only a few shops i know of that do the 2.0l engines. an im pretty doubtfull of the 1.6...
i went to one shop and the owner was arguing that my engine was out of an older kh laser. and it was a bp engine! i was getting really frustrated at the guy. i kept saying it aint, but he wouldnt listen!

Yeah its not a B6.

If your wanting more power ZM-DE head swaps, combine that with a ecu and it should all work nicely AFAIK

Yes i know ive said the above before. There arnt really any other options besides head swap or turbo.

I think ICE is talking about the MZR 1.5L head with SVT (Mazda2) that I've already told you about in another thread.
If you did this you would need an ECU that can control SVT/VVTi/etc...

Just contact Wade Cams and ask for their opinion.
Gav.

Pick up random bits of information and then search based on that. Its kinda like a knowledge tree i guess start somewhere and search and refine.
