Cup Holders In A BG Astina
Been a couple of years since ive updated this... ive been lazy but here it is if anyone is interested in cup holders.. i know all of you BG owners need one
ive installed a cupholder from a 1990 Subaru BC Liberty/Legacy (whichever country your from) into my BG Astina. its pretty easy but requires minor modifications. the reason why im using this specific cup holder is because it is very strong. how to remove the cup holder from the subaru vehicle: - remove the cup holder by pressing the center clip downwards (like the BG ash tray) - unclip buttons and "SUBARU" cover from the dash cover (yes u need to remove this to get to the cup holder bracket) - unscrew and unclip the climate control cover - pull climate control cover out and there should be 2 screws underneath holding the cup holder bracket This is the cup holder that i will be installing cut the sides of the cup holder and flatten the sides so it fits into the BG. the original screw holes in the image below will make the mounting of the cup holders a bit high up. you can keep it like that if u want the tray to drop all the way down (i will explain later). what i did was cut that part off where it is circled. and measured it out where it was gonna be sitting in the astina (the holes above original screw holes are off by a milimeter and i ended up drilling just above to the outside of the holes. drill a hole in the back of the tray the size of a plastic scew/wedge thingy (not sure what they're called this is what it should look like when inserted this is where the cup holder would sit if u were to cut off the original screw holes. i had to use a screwdriver and pry it a tiny bit larger so the plastic screw would just fit in this is what it should look like bolted up (2 screws and a plastic wedge screw (not visible) i had to cut the sides of the cup holder so it would slide in properly. its not too hard to pull out. if u find it too flush to the cover then dont cut the sides of the cup holder. i only did it to make it look "neat". I had to bond the tray with some custom brackets i made. although a bit messy, you wont see it when the surround is put back on. FINISHED PRODUCT Ok now for the pros and cons of having a cupholder. - Can hold many different items for you when you dont have a human cupholder in the car. - Very strong. thick plastic and metal frames. - Can hold the ipod into position while you watch videos - May get in the way (sometimes) when youre shifting - If you have a front USB/AUX like my head unit it can get in the way sometimes. although i dont have a problem because i have a cable. - The left side cup holder is in the way of the volume control (most head units). but i dont use that side anyway, and all my controls are done on the ipod (other than the volume) Overall. well worth the trouble that i put in for this cup holder. i dont have trouble shifting as i have skinny hands :P. and i dont slam it into gear either so its not a big problem for me with this kind of setup. Enjoy this little project if youre going to attempt it. Dont drink and drive, use cup holders. Chewy Last edited by chewyryce; 23-02-2012 at 08:45 AM. Reason: Updating information |

i've got something like that as well in my car. A word of warning though, it's not a good idea if you've got a flip out touchscreen thingie. I was finding that it would randomly beep every now and then as it accidently touched the screen. but apart from that, best thing if you dont have someone else to hold the drinks for you
