Sp20 engine rebuild

So I'm this close to butting the bullet and considering a engine rebuild, at 165km I don't know the history of the car, it's making a nice rattle that I'm starting to think is bottom end and it chews oil like crazy.

I'm going to have to pull the gearbox out as 3rd is screwed so why not renew both of the major components of the car.

Does anyone here know the rough estimate of such a thing (parts only as I'd do the work) including a overhaul kit, head reco, new flywheel, clutch and box.

I just hope my tax return is nice to me lol.

Depends on labour. If your not going to get aftermarket stuff buying a new engine is probably cheaper...

is this a temp fix or for a while? Reason I ask, is that I have noticed in your recent posts you were throwing the idea of turbo'ing, so why not set it up for that??

Just a thought

How long is a piece of string?

Clutches are $200-$1200

Recoing a gearbox is $600-1500, Might as well drop in a straight cut 3rd and an LSD while you're at it.

Flywheels are about $400-$1500

It really depends on what sort of level you want to go to, and what your aims are

Should do the 626 5th gear swap to IMO while the engines out.

So I've done some brain storming in the past few days. If I confirm at work tomorrow that the noise is infact the bottom end then I'm going to pull the engine down and gearbox out.

I've asked Phil to get onto his kiwi contacts about a ZE short block and ECU, if I can get that than I'll order a gearbox rebuilt kit from the US(via my workmate) and also throw in the 626 5th gear.

I'll be doing all the labour myself and pending tax return I'll be setting a budget of probably 1500-2000. This will be a good learning curve for me as we don't do much rebuilding at VW.

This will be an all out N/A rebuild, turboing is out of my financial range.

Fair nuff. Thinking of getting myself a ZE block and use my regrinds in the engine, pair it with a 4-1 manifold, 626 IM + enlarged throttle body, CAI and a tune to finish the kit off. Should be good for about 135-140kw.

EDIT: Forgot to include LSD + Fidanza fly wheel.

Yeah I wouldn't be mucking around with a complete -ZE swap. I'd just rebuild the current -DE with big cams and high comp pistons, add a progamable ems and you'll a better engine than a -ZE.

I personally don't think that an N/A protege needs one.

AutoExe made a larger throttle body (bored out stock one) but I only know of one person with one and that is on a turbo'ed car.

The AutoExe 65mm throttle bodies are rarer than hen's teeth

They dont make them anymore. IIRC the stock is 62mm? Was thinking a bigger throttle body would offer better engine response is all. The MAN also has a Autoexe throttle body on his car or he did.

Yeah cept the problem i have is that id need custom pistons and rods. ZE would be a cheaper option i would have thought

So Phil is a legend, gave me cost for a engine and ECU which I'm seriously thinking of getting, depending on tax returns

Plus a gearbox rebuild kit my mate is gonna quote me on in the next few days.

You'd be mad not to throw in an LSD at the same time, IMO

Someone please enlighten me, I just read this in wiki

Quote:
-VICS (Variable Inertial Charge System) - A system that can vary the volume of the intake manifold resulting in a broader power band. There were known issues with this system, the most noteworthy was a defect which allowed screws that secured the VICS butterfly valves to come loose and end up being sucked into the engine. Some engines had to be replaced entirely due to the extent of the damage caused. [2]

-VTCS (Variable Tumble Control System) - A set of butterflies in the intake manifold that would close to promote low emissions combustion under cold start at low engine speeds. These had a reputation of being noisy at times.
so I've started thinking what are we looking at here

If that's VICS, what's VTCS?? and vise versa??
