My old Excel used to pop out of 5th gear all the time and it was fixed by replacing the engine mounts.
My uncles old Toyota Celica had the same problem in third and was fixed the same way.

Not yet. But the ones under the shifter are stiff due to the Twm SS. I'll have a look tomorrow at work. It could be just that.

There are three mounts, one on the gearbox as well. Have you replaced that?

There's actually 4 mounts in the engine bay the gearbox side and engine side mount look fine.

Just have a go at changing l the bushes before you rip your gearbox apart and spend too much money. Even if the look stiff and good, change them. It's only like ~30 for a set and it takes like 30 min to change.
Same goes for the gearbox and rear engine mount. Sometimes they give internally right against the shaft, and while they look good they can give more movement than expected.
I'm just throwing it out there nothing worst than changing a major part to realize something minor was fubared all along
One of tue guys on the rx8 forum went through something like 3 engines, and in the end the omp pipes were found to be clogged (same pipes were always used and never cleaned) resulting in the rear rotor getting little to no oil on the apex seals and wearing through the surface.. That part was ~300.. 2 failed engines, well, Quite a bit more.
And if it turns out that after you changed the bushes and mounts it's still popping, well hay when you get a new box it will be sitting on new mounts anyway then right

Checked out all the bushes and engine mounts today at work. (side note - rotate wheels )

Couldn't spot any splits in anything except for the lower control arm bushes, so I'm gonna get my mate to get me a final cost on that box from the US. Than I can weigh up mats to the us option.

This is killing my fuel consumption aswell :/

So the box from the us was sold :/

Weighing up my options now as I'm also considering a ZE from NZ. Do I go all out with mats box and LSD with the ZE (3000-3500+) or do i just buy a second hand box and re-ring and bearing my engine (500-1000) ???

Help

whats wrong with your engine ?

I'd say buy a 2nd hand box swap it out then investigate your box. having more then one box or in my case 4 is handy. in fact I've got 3 boxs for each of my mazda's. wird but happens when you play with a daily. yet I use other cars as dailys more often - really stupid when one thinks about it.
