BA spark plugs leaking

Hi Everyone,

** I'm not technical when it comes to engines so bear with me on this one **

Now I might have gotten duped here not sure, but my car is currently in with City Mazda in Adelaide and they rang me today to tell me the head part of the engine that the spark plugs are fitted to is starting to leak oil.

I was informed that it could not wait until my next 6-month service to get looked at and repaired and that it would start backfiring and such, I've told them to proceed with a estimated cost of over $700

Did I get duped or could this be happening? It hasn't been picked up in previous service visits and I am just wondering if I am being taken for a ride. If this could be happening, what can cause something like this?

They did tell me the name of the block that is needing repair but I can't remember it now and didn't have any paper handy while at work to write it down on.

Thoughts?

a rocker cover gasket is $22.

dunno where the other $678 comes from.

but it is a chargable 1 hour job max.

unless they meant the head gasket, which has nothing to do with the spark plugs.

why are you taking a 13 year old car to a dealership to have overpriced services done?

Thanks mate - With my recent run of services, I am going to start looking for another repairer, someone cheaper that can do things a bit easier and on weekends preferably....

Not Head Gasket, that part name I recognise so it would have stuck with me, rocker gasket sounds familiar

if it is that part. it's an easy fix. with a socket set, you can replace it yourself.

there is even a guide to do it somewhere on these forums.

$700 for an I4 rocker cover gasket is a bit rich.
Genuine Mazda rubber gasket is $70ish
Genuine PCV valve seal $5ish (I'd change that at the same time)
Distributor 'O' ring $5ish (I'm being very generous)
Clean motor (steam/high preasure), reset timing, general labour 2 x 1 hour @ $150 per hour.
That's under $400 of course if it's the rear bank of a V6 then yeah $700 sounds good.

Hmmm so maybe not completely ripped off but given the recent run of services a second opinion in future might pay off.

Thanks everyone.

Hey Champ,

$700 sounds alot even for mazda dealer and for a V6 .....

What else did they do ? a service maybe ?

They should have given you a invoice of what was done and parts used + labour charges etc...

do you have that ? if so what does it say ? only way to find out really .
