well if someone decides to organize a group buy which includes double din touch screens put me down for one i think i'll build the rest of the hardware myself though, planning on running centrafuse as a front end as I've used it before and it's really good. I can get boot times in under 30seconds on windows 7 using a 2.4ghz Pentium 4 which is faster than I could get XP on the same machine.

There are single din fold out 7 inch touch screen LCD available.
They are very expensive and what I want so I can retain my head unit as well
I would like the full car pc setup but haven't seen one thats perfect yet,
There are double din cases available and you mount a 7 inch touchscreen on the front.
This looks very interesting but the cost is going to be fairly substantial,
Considering I can get an all in one touchscreen gps bluetooth dvb-t 7 inch folding screen from china for $300

let us know what the quality of the touchscreens are... still abit useless though - if i wanted gps itd have to be on the dash (aka my nice 4.3inch screened phone with a very fast processor = better navigation than the dedicated gps's!)

but ive always wondered about this, but with digital radio and my current HU with 2 amps, a few aux and whatnot itd be hard to find something which pleased me so much!

That is the screen I've been looking for. If a GB happens I will most likely be in depending on price.

Details On Item:
D201GLY2A motherboard with Intel Celeron 1.2Ghz CPU
M2-ATX PSU
1GB Buffalo DDR2 RAM
Mini ITX case
80GB HARD DRIVE

Note: System comes with Windows XP and Centrafuse fully running. The system is new and never been used.
Never installed in a car, $300 + postage from Sydney..

My main goals for getting a car pc are really:

1. Ability to surf the web
2. Able to play music/video
3 GPS compatible

Number 3 is just a bonus really, but the first 2 are a must...

That pc is capable of doing what you are after but from what I can see it does not have AV(or TV out) out so you wont be able to connect it you your existing screen.

mmm could be interested in something like that.

I have found what in looking for, Its almost exactly the same as what I bought a few years ago but never received.

But its way over $500 but is exactly what Orion and myself are looking for.
I get to keep my headunit and he gets to keep his guages,

I have decided that i am going to use my eeepc 901 as its tiny, is 12 volt already and has 2 solid state drives in it.
It is wireless N and has bluetooth already in it.
Its also a hell of a lot cheaper than me finishing my carputer.

I was going to sell it to my boss but have just changed my mind.

I have been looking into software and have found out a few different options and one of the best so far I have seen is OpenICE

Im going to install open ice on my eeepc tomorrow at work so may even be able to preview it tomorrow night.

The only thing I havent got/or lost for the Carputers is the 240V AC to 5A 12V DC adaptor to set it up out side the car/ use it for other things,
You can just connect a regular atx power supply for testing
I can get PSUs from work and it is the main reason why I haven't done anything to them.
I can also supply HDD's and optical drives for the mini pcs if people want or are interested.
I could supply them built and tested if people want.
At the moment they are mainly in parts.

Some of the parts that I have available

2 mini itx cases with 12V to ATX PSU's in them, But I think they would need a regulated 12V supply and they are both black

2X Via C3 Epia M mainboards,

1 X M2 12V ATX PSU M2 ATX PSU

Im asking $150 each for the case with a mainboard and in it and $100 for the M2 power supply.
I have got HDD's and RAM available as well if people need it.

Im trying to make it as cheap as possible for people as they may have old bits lying round to complete their own carputer.

Well, I want to keep my headunit as well, but I have seen those before and they were pretty interesting.

I am looking at other options, but I'm really looking a media player setup with a touchscreen:
- something that plays MP3's and DVD's mainly
- plugs into an iPhone for internet
- possibly with its own GPS

Also, I have seen a fair few setups done with the Road Runner - it would be interesting to see what you can do with 'open ice' software Phil.

hmm, just thought this, how many usb ports can the case accomodate? Reason I say this is what you'd need to run:

1. Wireless keyboard/mouse
2. Portable hdd
3. 3G broadband dongle (for those who dont wanna hook up the phone )
4. GPS dongle...

I initially thought about running the pc in the glovebox, but considering I'd need to run things wireless, this would be useless as you'd want to have the glovebox closed (well not resting on your knees), so looks like under the passenger seat it is...and just run the wires up under the centre console!
