Stripped Screw Heads

Does anyone know any tricks to getting screws out that have the heads stripped?

I've got a couple of phillips head screws that have pretty much become rivets due to being mistreated, one of them is on my fuel filter cover, and the other is holding one side of the MAF sensor in.

cheers all

EZ-outs are your first option.

Basicly drill the centre of the screw/bolt, insert ez-out and turn it to the left. It digs in because it's reverse thread and the screw should come undone.

If the screw's large enough try to tap it anticlockwise with a chisel gently

thanks for the help guys, the screw heads are in tight spots, so i think the ez out is the best way to go, vice grips and chisels aren't an option due to the head being recessed. tho the fuel filter cover might work with those. I'll keep the suggestions in mind as it seems my car is held together by a lot of soft metal bolts :\

Cheers again

i paid a dude $100 to remove some bolts i stripped... oops. lesson learnt that day! hpe you get them out easily. i have since bought the tools he used manufactured by irwin they arent eazy outs, but like a socket shape, which has the same anticlockwise teeth. worked a charm for the other bolts i rooted in the process.. cost me $50 for the set of 4 at a tool shop.
