Old thread I know ,but I just have to post What a nice little mod this is.
I have a 2001 laser sr with the 1.8 engine and a 2003 Mazda Sp-20.
I started with the laser, deleted the Resonator and the waffle and opened the grill panel. cut the front and sides and bent the panel down as suggested by an earlier poster, this I believe is the best way to do this mod. more on that later.
I have been working at Yatala A 30 min commute . 10 min at 60kph and a 20min run on the freeway.Right from the first trip you could tell the car was breathing better, revs rise (and fall ?) faster.Soon as I hit the freeway the engine temp drops noticeably didn't do that before! and remember i make this trip twice a day right through summer.
So summing up better engine response , runs cooler, slightly better fuel economy with a very slight increase in induction noise.
The sp-20 went with the same mods except this time drilled out in between the honeycomb grill segments only and didn't cut the panel. Real neat you can hardly notice the mod.
I've got similar results but not as noticeable . So I have to say cut the panel and bend for that ram effect.
Thanks guys for the mod

Another thought. Because the snorkel fits on top of the radiator and in front of the exhaust manifold I constructed a heat shield out of white corflute and fitted it under the snorkel.Seems to help keep the intake cooler. Anyway no cost ,just 10mins of my time .
